Students practice school security
The Warren County School District has been checking its preparedness.
There are a number of unpleasant situations the district must prepare its students for every year.
“The district is required to hold drills during the school year for Fire, Outside Threat, Intruder Threat, Severe Weather and Bus Safety Drills,” Safety and Security Coordinator Brandon Deppen said.
“Over the past few weeks we have been completing the Intruder drills at each of the schools,” Deppen said. “The drill is initiated through an announcement over the PA system.”
Students and teachers clear the halls, lock the doors, turn out the lights, and do whatever they can to keep an intruder out.
“The students are practicing barricading their classroom,” Deppen said. “Our law enforcement and emergency management partners will then go to each room to release them from the drill.”
Students are given instructions about what they should do under certain circumstances — when they should lock the doors, turn off the lights, and stay out of sight, and when they should evacuate.
They are told not to open the door for anyone — law enforcement will be able to unlock the doors.
“The officers give them a critique and answer any questions they may have,” Deppen said. “The students and staff have been doing a tremendous job. We will be finishing the drills next week.”
