Jail ceiling escape thwarted, man charged

A Jamestown, N.Y., man is behind bars after trying to climb through the ceiling of a holding cell at the Warren County Jail.

Blair Daniels, 32, was charged by the Warren County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday and arraigned by District Judge Raymond Zydonik this morning.

The incident occurred on Aug. 6 at about 11 a.m. Deputies state that Daniels was brought to the jail from the Chautauqua County Jail and placed in a holding cell.

A jail official first saw “Daniels escaping through the ceiling” and additional staff and several deputies swung into action. Two deputies grabbed Daniels by the ankles before he, per the affidavit “realized that he could not overcome the restraining force.”

The affidavit states Sheriff Brian Zeybel “calmly instructed Daniels to come down out of the ceiling. Deputies then assisted Daniels down to the bench, once on the bench Daniels was instructed to lay down on the ground.”

A deputy went to handcuff Daniels but deputies then decided to handcuff him to the bench of the holding cell. Four deputies then “assisted Daniels to his feet and cuffed each of his hands to the bench.”

After the booking process was completed, a deputy went back to the holding cell to survey the damage which, according to the affidavit, included two broken ceiling tiles, a couple damaged support rails as well as a pipe and air duct in the ceiling that were damaged.

Online court records show Daniels was charged with escape, institutional vandalism and criminal mischief.

Bail was set at $35,000 on Wednesday with a preliminary hearing set for later this month, those records show.

Starting at $3.50/week.
