Fleeing charges net $500k bail

A Lancaster County man is behind bars on $500,000 bail in Warren County after he fled from police – by vehicle at in excess of 100 mph and on foot – on Tuesday.

Anthony S. Garman, 31, 101 Brimmer Ave., New Holland, Pa., was charged by Corry-based Pennsylvania State Police through District Judge Todd Woodin’s office.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday troopers were traveling east on US 6 when a black Audi station wagon was observed “following a pickup truck closer than is reasonable and prudent,” according to the affidavit of probable cause.

Troopers turned around and observed the Audi “accelerate at a high rate of speed.” They “traveled in excess of 105 mph from Baccus Corners Rd. to the intersection of (US) 6 and Pike Rd., approx. (sic) three miles where I was able to catch up with the vehicle and initiate a traffic stop….”

Troopers say the operator provided registration and insurance but “claimed he left his license at home,” telling police his name was that of someone else. During the stop, troopers say they “smelled the strong odor of maijuana emanating from the vehicle and observed the operator’s slow speech and bloodshot eyes.”

The operator didn’t offer consent to search the vehicle after turning over a “blue and black smoking pipe with burnt residue.”

Troopers went to handcuff and arrest the man for DUI and possession when he “suddenly bolted away from the front of my patrol vehicle and ran northeast, across SR 957 and into backyards of multiple residences and Columbus Elementary School.”

Troopers investigated the vehicle’s registration and “Anthony Scott Garman, the son of the registered owner, was listed,” the affidavit states. “A PennDOT photo of Garman matched the description of the (operator police) attempted to arrest.”

Police say a search revealed “several active arrest warrants” for various violations and that one warrant identified him as a “assaultive, violent parole violator.”

A search of the area didn’t result in police finding Garman after he fled. The affidavit details that he had been located at a Snyder Circle address in Corry before he “fled… out of the back door….”

He appears to have been arrested on Thursday as online court records show that he was arraigned by District Judge Todd Woodin at 8:45 a.m.

He was unable, those records show, to post bail set at $500,000.

He faces charges of flight to avoid apprehension, DUI, driving while operating privilege suspended or revoked, possession of a controlled substance, four counts of marijuana – small amount personal use, six counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, a speeding violation, following too closely and false identification to law enforcement officer.
