Rotary fundraiser to benefit playground

Times Observer photos by Josh Cotton The Rotary Club of Warren is planning a Duck Derby for June 26 to benefit the Lacy Park multi-sensory playground. Organizers are, from left, front, Harvey Stone and Vicky Willman and, back, Vince DeJoy, Brenda Jones, Bill Jones, Ruby Wiles, Randy Gustafson and Ruby Stone. Tickets for the Duck Derby are available at White Cane Coffee, Stone Consulting or online at bit.ly/WarrenDuckDerby. They’ll also be for sale at the Warren Tire Center picnic set for June 19.

The duck population on the Allegheny River will see a significant spike later this month.

That’s due to a fundraiser aimed at raising money for continued additions to the Lacy Park multi-sensory playground.

The Rotary Club of Warren will be hosting a Duck Derby on June 26 at Breeze Point Landing.

A duck derby is exactly what it sounds like.

“The ducks will be in the river safely in a ‘swim lane’ so they do not scatter or get lost,” Ruby Stone told the Times Observer. “We have over 2,000 ducks and will put in as many as we get sponsored.”

The derby is the capstone to a larger event set at the park for the 26th.

“The race starts at 3 p.m., but starting at 11 a.m. we will have a band, food trucks, face painting and more happening at Breeze Point Park,” Stone said.

When improvements at Lacy Park were dedicated last year, the hope was to be able to expand the multi-sensory playground. The first part of that expansion identified by organizers was to replace the wood chip surface with a rubber surface similar to what is at Crescent Park.

That will make the playground much more navigable for children with mobility issues.

The Rotary Club is selling tickets for the Duck Derby between now and the 26th — one duck for $5, six ducks for $25 and a “flock” of 100 ducks for $100.

Tickets are available at White Cane Coffee, Stone Consulting or online at bit.ly/WarrenDuckDerby. They’ll also be for sale at the Warren Tire Center picnic set for June 19.

The sponsor of the first duck to cross the line will in an Old Town vapor 10 foot kayak from Allegheny Outfitters while second through fourth places will receive, in order, a gift certificate to Bent Run Brewing, a one month indoor climbing pass at Goat Fort and a Penn Wilds gift certificate.

Starting at $3.50/week.
