Effective smoke detectors and a quick response from City of Warren fire crews prevented a Tuesday morning fire from turning into a far more dire situation.
Fire Chief Rodney Wren said the call came in at 7:35 a.m. for a report of a possible structure fire with smoke showing at 610 Fourth Ave.
Wren said that city police officers were assisting the residence out of the structure when fire crews arrived. He said there was “heavy smoke showing from the attic.”
The Salvation Army was assisting the residents, he added.
Wren highlighted the importance of operational smoke detectors – he said the detectors “alerted the residents of the building” to the developing situation.

“The guys all did a really good job. Folks called in the fire early. It got up into the third floor (and) ran up the walls… really quickly,” he said. It was “really important getting there in a timely fashion.”
The early warning from the smoke detectors, he added, was “super important.”
“I would say the structure is definitely salvageable,” he said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Wren noted, through, that the “bulk of the fire was in the area of a heating appliance.”
