Jackson Day to feature Pa. Supreme Court Justice Baer

A sitting Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice highlights an event next month that celebrate the 127th birthday of one of the region’s most famous sons.

Robert H. Jackson, a former U.S. Supreme Court Justice and prosecutor of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg, was born on a family farm just outside Spring Creek.

And a talk set for Wednesday, February 13 will be the 14th annual Jackson Day Event, according to a statement from the Robert H. Jackson Center in Jamestown.

The event will take place at the Warren County Courthouse from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is open to the public.

Supreme Court Justice Max Baer will be presenting a program entitled “From William Penn to John Marshall to Robert H. Jackson.”

According to the Jackson Center, the presentation “focuses on the three men’s concepts of constitutional democracy and the role of the judiciary.

“William Penn, John Marshall and Robert H. Jackson each made significant contributions to the framework of democracy that gave voice to the shared principles expressed in the U.S. Constitution. Justice Max Baer will explore these themes from his view on the bench of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court….”

The Center’s statement indicates that Baer was first elected to the state Supreme Court in 2003 and had previously served as a court of common pleas judge in Allegheny County.

“During this tenure, Justice Baer implemented far-reaching reforms to both Juvenile Court and Domestic Relations, earning him statewide and national recognition,” the statement said. “Justice Baer was eventually assigned to the Civil Division, where he continued to distinguish himself until assuming his new duties on the Supreme Court.”
