Scarpo returning with transformational program

Brent Scarpo, a Warren native and nationally known transformational speaker is coming back to Warren to continue his five-year character building program at his alma mater, Warren Area High School.

In addition to presenting a $1,000 Senior Character Scholarship, he has added a $1,000 Teacher Achievement Award for inspirational, creative and imaginative teaching. He has invited all WAHS students to nominate a teacher that has left a lasting impression on them by making content interesting and understandable.

On Monday, Sept. 29, he will begin his week-long program by announcing the five teacher finalists.

“Living Like Mama D” is the theme behind his third year in the five year plan, and Scarpo will present this program on Tuesday.

Following the presentation, the winner of the Teacher Achievement Award and the finalist for the Senior Character Scholarship Award for continuing education will be announced.

Scarpo has asked teachers to nominate a senior for the scholarship, based on the student’s good character, conduct and civility throughout their high school career, and care and concern for others at their school and in the community. “Think Random Acts of Kindness,” he said.

“Unlike most leadership programs, this program is based on the concepts of Robert Greenleaf, the pioneer in servant leadership. I will introduce his concepts and present a documentary that I purchased from a friend, who follows the work of Mama D. Her biography reads, “The homeless feeding program was started in 1983 by Delia Parvati Javier, affectionately known as “Mama D”. Originally from the Philippines, Delia was a very charismatic person who came to Los Angeles to work in the world of film and theatre’.”

“Upon seeing the stark contrast of homeless people in downtown LA to the wealthy of Hollywood, she quickly gathered fellow actors to help her in creating this service project. Every Sunday morning, for the next 22 years, Mama D was on the street serving food and distributing clothes to her homeless friends.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
