Poppy Campaign
Memorial Day is near and the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 8803 has started its Buddy Poppy Campaign. This is a special day that we remember and honor those who gave the supreme sacrifice to keep us safe and free.
The Red Poppy became associated with war after the publication of a poem by Col. John McCrae of Canada. The poem, “In Flanders Field”, describes red fields among the battlefield of the fallen.
The VFW conducted its first poppy distribution before Memorial Day in 1922. The poppy was soon adopted as the official Memorial Flower of the VFW. It was during the 1923 encampment that the VFW decided to have the Buddy Poppy assembled by disabled and needy veterans who would be paid for their work. Still today when the VFW and its Ladies Auxiliary purchase Buddy Poppies it provides compensation to the veterans who assemble them.
Wear the Buddy Poppy proudly especially on Memorial Day and remember those who sacrificed so much for their country. All proceeds from donations go to the needy veterans, family and veteran programs in this area.

Mock Accident
On Thursday, May 7, 2015, students in grades 9 through 12 were invited to witness a Mock Car Crash at Tidioute Community Charter School. The purpose of the mock car crash, is to make students aware of the destructive decisions they may make on Prom Night, as well as any other night they may decide to attend a party with drugs and alcohol present.
As students reached the site of the accident, they were instructed to cover their eyes and listen to what was happening. Deputy Chuck Fetzeck informed the students that there had been an accident at the intersection of Tidioute Enterprise Road and route 27. Four of their fellow classmates, Brian Faulkner, Lakin Krouse, Allyvia Morgan, and Desi McChesney, were hit head on by a drunk driver. The students were to keep their eyes closed until the first responder reached the scene.
Once the first responder reached the scene, Tidioute Volunteer Fire Department, they began to examine the situation and work at getting anyone that was injured out of the vehicle. They were assisted by Emergycare.
The drunk driver, Amanda Slattery, was given several sobriety tests from Officer Steve Vincent. It was determined she was over the legal limit and was place under arrest. She was taken away from the scene.
At the scene, it was determined that Brian Faulkner had passed away from his injuries. The corner, Jerry Borden, was dispatched to the scene. Upon arriving to the scene, he pronounced Brian as deceased and showed students some of the things the coroner has to do while on scene. Brian was placed in a body bag and taken form the scene by Nelson Funeral Home.
Once the Mock Car Crash was over, students were dismissed to the gym. when students walked into the gym, they were greeted by a casket, donated by Nelson Funeral Home. Once students took their seats, they listened to two speakers from the Victim Impact Panel, Nancy Gabel and Tim Courtney. Both speakers had lost their daughter to a drunk driver. Students listened to Assistant District Attorney, Caleb Gnage, speak about the consequences of drinking and driving.
It is our hope that the students were impacted by this presentation. Being hit by a drunk driver can happen to anyone, at anytime. These students need to be aware of what possible outcomes could result from their actions, or the actions of others.
