Sheriff warns of scam aimed at county residents

Warren County Sheriff Scott J. Neiswonger is warning residents about a phone scam.

Neiswonger said Friday afternoon he received several calls about a subject calling residents claiming he is a Sergeant Mike Webster from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office in New York or the Warren County Sheriff’s Office in Pennsylvania. The male is claiming that residence have missed a payment on fines or on an outstanding warrant. The caller is requesting that they go to the bank or send him money to pay for cost associated with a criminal matter. This is to take care of the pending warrant so that they can avoid being placed in jail for non-payment.

“The Warren County Sheriff’s Office wanted to advise everyone that our office does not take money payments over the phone, Venmo or Apple Pay,” he said. “We will not ask for your personal social security number or banking information over the phone. We want to advise the citizens that this is a scam and we want everyone to be aware. Residents are urged to immediately hang up the phone, do not call the scammers back if they leave a message and do not engage in speaking with these sorts of scammers.”

If you have fallen victim to a possible scam, residents are directed to contact your local law enforcement agency to report any loss that you may have.
