Area Agencies on Aging are ‘trusted services’

Dear Editor, As retired Area Agency on Aging Administrators in the northwestern Pennsylvania region, we are writing to express our deep concern over a change being executed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) that will eliminate the local Area Agencies on Aging from the Medicaid assessment/eligibility process for older adults and persons with disabilities. The state is currently preparing for negotiations with Maximus US Services, Inc. (Maximus) to expand its scope of work as the Independent Enrollment Broker to include the assessment responsibility. For over 30 ...

Normalcy within reach

Dear Editor, I was intrigued by a recent letter that Norway and Sweden have gone back to pre-COVID normalcy. We could, too! How? If we had the vaccination rates of those countries, we could both protect our children and all adults whose health conditions prevent a robust response to the vaccines and return to normal life! Here is the key: Norway’s full vaccination rate is 86.2% with at least 91.6% of the population having had at least one dose. Sweden’s is similar:78.8% fully vaccinated, 84.7% with at least one dose. Iceland is the leader: 91% fully vaccinated, 92% with at ...

Be certain on COVID

Dear Editor, In late September, my wife and I went to the walk-in clinic to have our rapid COVID tests done so that we could attend a concert in Pittsburgh, and we needed to have negative tests for such. We immediately got our results, both of us were negative and we continued with our plans to leave the next morning. Fast forward to the next day as we are getting ready to walk out the door, I get a phone call from Warren General Hospital telling me that my COVID test is positive. I went into complete panic mode, after all I was feeling fine, and why did my rapid test say negative? ...

Write-in option for school

Dear Editor, There are many critical issues facing this country, one of which is critical race theory. This ideology is a growing concern to many parents who do not want this taught in their children’s schools. Several school boards throughout the nation are being scrutinized by parents in order to determine whether these ideas are being taught in the schools their children attend. Closer to home, there is a contest in Region II for the Warren County School Board. These areas are: Boroughs of Clarendon and Tidioute and Townships of Cherry Grove, Conewango, Deerfield, Eldred, ...

Dear Editor, Ph.D.s Carol Swain and Christopher Echoed wrote a book entitled “Black Eye for America.” They stated that Critical Race Theory is “warmed over Marxism that substitutes race for class.” They went on to state that “in K-12 schools (Critical Race Theory) hides behind euphemistic labels such as antiracism, educational equity and cultural competency.” They put the theory right where it belongs when they said it is a total rejection of American’s liberal tradition in terms of how we ought to treat each other as morally equal and autonomous individuals (in) ...

Four long years

Dear Editor, Lest we forget, to blame Joe Biden for the Afghanistan debacle, the Border Crisis or any other of his missteps is ridiculous. He’s likely doing the best he can but did Americans do their best putting him in office or was it just “Dump Trump” at all cost? Somebody in his administration is pretty smart having him carry all those cue cards around with him that tell him what he can, and shouldn’t, say or do in office. The guy is 78 years old, clearly suffers from frequent mental confusion, his only experience is being a career politician for 50 plus years, a lawyer ...
