UNION CITY — Eisenhower’s junior high wrestling team turned in another good showing over the weekend at the Ed Margie Memorial Tournament.

Propelled by two champions and a runner-up, the Knights finished in eighth place out of 22 teams in the team race.

Individually, Johnathan Sullivan and Leeland Brown were crowned champions of their respective weight classes. Owen Ash finished as a runner-up.

Sullivan began his day with a bye. In the quarterfinals, Sullivan ran up a big 14-1 first-period lead over Beaty’s Brody Connolly before securing the fall at 1:45. Sullivan only needed 18 seconds to dispatch of Corry’s Sunjay Jones in the semis. In the finals, Sullivan took a 6-1 first-period lead over Maplewood’s Aiden Marvin and translated it into another pin to be crowned champion.

Brown showed some grit early on in his first match as he fell behind 9-3 to Meadville’s Carter Bennett after two periods. Brown chose down to start the third period and scored a quick reversal before sinking a half-nelson to pick up the come-from-behind victory. In the semis, Brown posted a dominant 10-1 major decision victory over Maplewood’s James Guthrie to set up a finals match against Meadville’s CJ Powell. Brown left little doubt in his match with Powell as he scored a quick takedown and the fall in 1:23.

Owen Ash had another good performance as he fought through a 22-person bracket. Ash opened his day with a quick 51-second pin over Harbor Creek’s Eli McCallion and a pin in 2:11 over Greenville’s Dyna Tidd to reach the quarterfinals. Ash then knocked off Meadville’s Darrell Wisniewski by fall in 1:28 seconds to move into the semifinals. In the semis, Ash posted a controlling 16-7 major decision over McDowell’s Jimmy Ahmad. In the finals, Ash squared off with Harbor Creek’s Brayden Lemke. Lemke held a 3-0 lead going into the second period before a three-point nearfall extended his lead to 6-0. One additional turn scored the fall for Lemke and ended the match.

Picking up wins for the Knights, but not placing, were Ronnie Shellhouse, who earned a wild 21-5 technical fall over Beaty’s Caleb Zuck, and Braydan Taylor who won 17-4 over Sheffield’s Noah Fohrd.

Also wrestling for the Knights were Eric Woodin and Brantley Coleson.

“I was glad to see Leeland finally get that tournament title that’s been eluding him the past few weeks,” Coach Tim Suydan said. “Johnathan looked dominant in his matches. Owen wrestled well against a terrific wrestler in Brayden Lemke, who will probably make a good amount of noise at states this year.

“Overall, the boys performed well. We’ve been dealing with kids being in and out of the practice room all week due to the flu bug that’s going around so I knew we’d be a little short-handed. Fortunately, the boys stepped up and did well as they outplaced several teams who had more wrestlers than us.”
