Today’s semifinals set at STWOA Holiday Classic

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — Eleven area wrestlers booked their spots in the semifinals of the STWOA Holiday Classic on Friday night at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.

All but two top seeds took care of business advancing to this morning’s semifinals, including dominant runs from Randolph’s Kamren Anderson at 103 pounds, Southwestern’s Adrian Torres at 110 pounds, Southwestern’s Miles Torres at 126 pounds, Maple Grove’s Jaxon Kraft at 150 pounds and Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Patrick Braley at 190 pounds.

Having a first-round bye, Anderson used a pin over Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Chester Machemer at 3:48 and then an 18-9 major decision against Dansville/Wayland/Cohocton’s Weston Mehlenbacher for his spot. The Randolph senior will battle the No. 28 St. Francis freshman Jaxson Tocco for a spot in the finals.

The winner of that bout will face either St. Francis sophomore Patrick Winseman or Canandaigua freshman Wyatt Cuppernell.

Southwestern senior Adrian Torres wrestled for less than two minutes Friday, using three first-round pins to reach the 110-pound semifinals against St. Francis junior John Winseman, the No. 4 seed. Torres pinned Harbor Creek’s (Pa.) Dan Bossart at 29 seconds, then Portville freshman Chase Caldwell at 1:18 and Letchworth senior Denison Johnson at 21 seconds.

The other 110-pound semifinal is Union City (Pa.) senior Van Ward against Eden/North Collins junior Mason DellaPenta.

Southwestern junior Miles Torres took a little more time than his brother, but was just as impressive at 126 pounds. He first worked a 14-2 major decision against Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Logan Fuller, then he pinned Jamestown senior Nicholas Melendez at 2:32 and then a 17-2 technical fall over Corry (Pa.) sophomore Roman Kafferlin in the quarterfinals.

Miles will take on No. 4 seed Harbor Creek (Pa.) senior Hunter Chew in the semifinals, while the other side of the bracket is St. Francis junior Brayden Kellison and Waverly junior Rhylee Stotler.

Kraft also received a bye to start his run at 150 pounds and used a pair of first-round pins to reach the semis. He first defeated Frewsburg eighth-grader Kamronn Smith in 1:06 and then took down Waverly junior Parker Larson in 1:14.

The Maple Grove sophomore will wrestle No. 5 Port Allegany (Pa.) sophomore Brandon Furgeson in the semifinals. The other semifinal bout is No. 3 Max McCarthy of St. Francis against No. 7 Carson Braswell of Corry (Pa.).

Braley toyed with his opponents in the 190-pound bracket, starting with a 19-3 technical fall over Northern Bedford County (Pa.) Justice Suter. He then pinned Springville senior Austin Dean at 32 seconds and Brockway (Pa.) junior Cash Butters at 46 seconds.

The Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior will wrestle No. 5 seed Harbor Creek senior Tom Gunther in the semifinals, with the winner facing either No. 6 Brian Schroeder of Letchworth or No. 2 Dylan Fitzgerald of Brockport.

Southwestern senior Carmine Calimeri entered as the No. 2 seed at 144 pounds, but has wrestled like the top dog with three first-round pins to reach the semifinals. He defeated Frewsburg sophomore Connor Campion at 1:04, Warren (Pa.) freshman Tucker Sanford in 43 seconds and then Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer sophomore Alex Bourgeois at 1:11.

Three local wrestlers will take to the semifinals at 132 pounds, No. 5 Jamestown junior Aaden Howard will have the toughest test with St. Francis top-seeded Cullen Edwards who was the Catholic High School Athletic Association champion at 116 pounds last year. Howard earned his spot with a 19-4 technical fall over Northern Bedford Co. (Pa.) junior Carson Foor, a pin against Corry (Pa.) junior Logan Wilis at 0:54 and then a high-scoring 16-13 decision over Eden/North Collins junior Ruger Pastwik.

The 132-pound final will feature either No. 2 Falconer/Cassadaga Valley junior Dylan Newman or No. 3 Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior Thandon Bensink as they go toe-to-toe in the semis.

Newman first earned a pin over Portville senior Riley Horsley at 4:23, then a narrow 11-9 decision against Corry (Pa.) senior Steven Willis and a 13-2 major decision over Brockport senior Jayden Miesch in the quarterfinals.

Bensink cruised with two pins and a technical fall, defeating Warren (Pa.) sophomore Cameron Hagg in 41 seconds, then Southwestern junior Jacob Grey in 53 seconds and Port Allegany (Pa.) junior Ian Fitzsimmons 15-0.

Hamilton had a bye then two pins to reach the semis, defeating Frewsburg senior Isaiah Caldwell at 55 seconds and then Williamson’s (Pa.) Ben Freeman at 1:59.

If Hamilton pulls off the upset, he will take on either No. 3 St. Francis freshman Dominic Darch or Brockway (Pa.) junior and No. 7 seed Madox Decker.

The big upset is already out of the way for Falconer/Cassadaga Valley senior Riley Best at 175 pounds and Southwestern senior Brayden Potter at 285.

However, Best still takes on second-seeded Steven Olson of Williamson in the semifinals, but as the No. 14 wrestler in the bracket it will not be his first upset. Best received a bye in the first round, but then took on No. 3 Maple Grove senior Ezekiel Padd and posted a 15-0 technical fall.
