RUSSELL — Friday night’s boys basketball game between Eisenhower and Lakeview saw the Knights start the game with three freshmen on the court, but it hardly fazed them as they won a hard-fought game 76-72.
One of those freshmen, Kymani Vine, continued his hot hand as he led the Knights with 22 points while fellow freshman Liam Hanson finished with 16 points.
The Sailors jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead before Eisenhower’s 3-point shots started to drop. After Rylan Benton nailed a pair, Vine hit one and senior Gavin Lindemuth nailed one from deep in the corner as the Knights held a 17-16 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The lead changed hands 14 times in the first half alone, but after Benton hit a pair of field goals, a Derek Guiher 3-pointer helped Eisenhower build a 37-32 halftime lead.
The Knights came out of the break and went to Guiher who drained another 3-pointer followed by a pair of field goals by freshman Paul Mandeville and a three-point play by Vine as the Knights increased their lead to 45-38.

Lakeview battled back to tie it up at 47-47 before Hanson hit a 3-pointer followed by a field goal. Lindemuth then chipped in 4 points as the Knights held a slim 58-55 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The freshmen took over for Eisenhower as Hanson drilled a pair of 3s to start the fourth quarter and Vine followed that up with a 3 and a pair of field goals to tie the game at 70-70.
Lakeview was able to take a 72-70 lead with a minute remaining on a field goal by Keaton Urey.
A field goal by Vine gave the Knights a 74-72 lead with under 30 seconds remaining. The Sailors missed a field goal and were forced to foul. Hanson went to the line and knocked down both free throws to ice the game for the Knights and improve their record to 4-0 on the season.
“The boys showed good poise tonight,” Eisenhower head coach Ryan Mangini said. “When things weren’t going their way they kept answering. Kymani and Liam had some really clutch moments in the fourth quarter. It’s a good win for us but there are definitely some things to work on.”
