RUSSELL — It was a tale of two halves Friday night for Eisenhower in its 41-22 loss to Greenville.
The Knights took the opening kickoff and drove down the field only to fumble on the Greenville 28-yard line.
The Trojans took over and eventually scored on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Carl Thurber to Justin Schell. The two-point conversion was good to make it 8-0 in favor of the visitors.
The Knights had no trouble moving the ball, but penalties put them in long-yardage situations to convert third downs.
Eisenhower was able to put a drive together and senior tailback Logan Penley scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run. Caleb Jakubczak converted the two-point attempt to tie the score at 8-8 with 46 seconds left.
The Trojans had a nice return on the kickoff and managed to score on a Thurber to Schell pass with just 13 seconds left, the PAT kick was good and the halftime score was 15-8.
Greenville received the second-half kickoff and needed one play to score when Rudy Gentile went around the left side of the Knights’ defense for a 62-yard touchdown to put the Trojans up 22-8.
The Trojans were able to add two more touchdowns to increase their lead to 34-8 before the Knights were able to find the end zone again.
Jakubczack added a touchdown on a 2-yard run and senior Gavin Lindemuth scored on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jakubczak. Bryceton Wilkins was a perfect 2-2 on PAT kicks for Eisenhower.
Greenville added an interception for a score when Jakubczak was hit while passing to close out the scoring.
Knight coach Jim Penley was proud of his team’s effort in the loss, “That was Mercer County football,” Knights head coach Jim Penley said. “They are a fundamentally sound, talented team. Our guys never quit. They fought until the end. I thought both Caleb and Logan ran really well tonight, I also thought Grayson Linkerhof played a good game for us.”
Eisenhower now waits for District 10 to decide on its playoff future. The selections will be made on Sunday morning.
