Eisenhower shuts out Iroquois 34-0
RUSSELL — The Eisenhower Knights moved to 2-1 on the season with an impressive 34-0 Region 3 shutout of the visiting Iroquois Braves on Friday night.
The Knights opened the game on defense and forced an Iroquois punt deep in its own territory. A bad snap helped Eisenhower recover at the 17-yard line, but it took all of two plays for the Knights to turn the ball back over with a fumble.
Eisenhower’s defense was solid all game and with the help of a quarterback sack and loss of 11 yards, forced another punt.
The Knights needed just two minutes to drive the ball down to the 5-yard line before senior tailback Logan Penley scored the first of his four touchdowns in the game. Bryce Wilkins connected on the first of his four point-after kicks to make it 7-0 with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
The Knights defense stood tall and stopped a fake punt by the Braves at midfield to force a change of possession. Penley would grind the ball down to the 4-yard line before a run up the middle for a touchdown. Wilkins’ kick was no good for a 13-0 lead.
The Knights defense intercepted three passes on the night with Caleb Jakubczak getting two and Joe Gigliotti getting one
“I thought our defense played well all game,” Eisenhower head coach Jim Penley said. “To get a shutout against Iroquois, wow, just a great job.”
Logan Penley, who had 77 yards on 17 carries in the game, wasn’t done as he added two more short touchdown runs, and junior fullback Nolan Gesing added a 3-yard touchdown run up the middle to start the fourth quarter.
“I thought Logan ran really well tonight,” Coach Penley said. “Iroquois keyed on Jakubczak and Logan took advantage. I thought our offensive line and Nolan Gesing did a phenomenal job tonight blocking.”
The Knights allowed Saegertown back into the game last week to make it close and Coach Penley was proud how the Knights took care of this game.
“One week ago we allowed a team to come back,” he said. “I was proud of how we played in the second half, and I was extremely proud of our line and how they responded to losing a starter.”
Eisenhower hosts Northwestern next Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
