RUSSELL — The Warren boys golf team hosted its Region 6 mega match at Cable Hollow Golf Course on Monday.
The Dragons shot a team score (best four out of five) of 348 to earn a fourth-place finish out of the five schools in attendance.
Meadville was the low team with a score of 298 led by medalist Luke Ferry who fired a 1-under 70.
Michael Palmieri paced the Dragons with a score of 82, followed by Gavin Haibach with an 87 and Hayden Hendricks with an 88. Zane Carlson shot a 91 and Ian Munksgard carded a 95.
“This was a great opportunity to keep up with McDowell in the team standings,” head coach Nate Sandberg said. “The kids were excited to play their home course but could not develop much consistency, unfortunately.”
“I had a great day on the course. I hit my driver well and the flatstick was solid, but my irons weren’t as accurate as I hoped,” Warren junior Michael Palmieri said.
“I really missed my wedges. The greens at Cable Hollow were very well maintained and rolled very fast. My biggest positive today was my ability to save par on some pretty bad looks. Getting up and down really saved me a lot of strokes.”
The Warren jayvee squad also participated in a nine-hole match against McDowell, General McLane and Meadville.
“The cool thing about our home match is everyone on the team gets to play,” Sandberg said. “I am extremely proud of how many kids we have on the team, and today we were fortunate to have that opportunity. Cable Hollow is very accommodating to our team and we are extremely grateful for that.”
Jayvee results were headlined by Eli Snyder’s 37 and Xander Russell’s 38 in the nine-hole contest. Presley Weldon shot a 40. Dragons football kicker and receiver Charlie Blum fired a 42, with Sebastian Lawson close behind with a 43. Newcomers Aaron Shene and Logan Crissey tied with 45s, and Isaac Neal ended with a 46. The final scores in the 40s were from Nate Leamon and Landon Snell, each shooting a 47 on the day. Rookie Colin Zdarko ended with a 53, Lincoln Olsen had a 55 and freshman Dehklund Conklin had a 60 in his first competition. Jacob Zaffino had a 66, Carson Britt 70, Matthew Franklin 72 and Leo Westover a 73.
Varsity returns to play Wednesday when they are on the road for a Region 6 mega match at Culbertson Hills Golf Course hosted by General McLane.
Junior varsity hosts the McDowell Trojans next Wednesday at Cable Hollow for a 10 a.m. start time.
