WARREN — The Warren girls tennis Team hosted the Mercyhurst Prep Lakers on Monday at Betts Park and in dramatic fashion, the Dragons narrowly defeated the Lakers 3-2.
“Lucy (Harrison) and Alannah (Garza) are two of the top girls in the district and put us in a position to win early by hitting their opponents off the court with clean ball striking and precision,” Warren head coach Thomas Pellegrino said. “This was a three-hour team match but because of these two, we were up 2-0 after about 40 minutes which took some pressure off the other three courts. These are high-level tennis players that continue to push the team to be better.
In first singles, Harrison played great offense and defense to roll to a 6-0, 6-0 win versus Vanessa Jarmolowicz. At second singles, Garza also “double-bagled” her opponent Addison Lauer 6-0, 6-0.
“This was an exciting and challenging match,” Garza said. “I’m very proud of how hard the team played and how we all pulled through to get the win.”
Warren’s Grace Carlson almost mounted the comeback against Khloe Kensill, but ultimately fell 6-0, 2-6, 2-6.

At second doubles, Mercyhurst’s Abbey Koca and Lucy Dunn defeated Brady Caudill and Olivia Romanosky 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
At a match score of 2-2, the Dragons’ victory was clinched by Sarah Harvey and Scotlynn Perry defeating Quinlan Cullen and Fiona Cade by a score of 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.
“Our first doubles was impressive today. The girls upped their game when we needed them most,” Pellegrino said. “Sarah (Harvey) was everywhere today, tracking down every ball and dictating play from the baseline while (Scotlynn) Perry stuck to her strengths and closed out the net.”
Warren improved to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in Region 2 play. They host the defending District 10 Class 3A champion Fairview today at Betts for a 4 p.m. start time.
“We had our chances to win this one 5-0 today but we have a young squad that is still learning and being tested,” Pellegrino said. “Although we dropped two tough three-setters today, it’s a great learning experience for our girls and it will only make us better moving forward.”
