Bolla tosses gem for Tarp Skunks

Left-hander throws complete-game two-hitter in Jamestown’s 3-1 victory

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Blake Herman and John Ondus were teammates on the Gowanda baseball team for three years prior to Ondus’ graduation in 2023.

The two figure to match up in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play in college beginning next fall, Herman at Canisius University and Ondus at Niagara University. They got a preview of those meetings Wednesday in Niagara Falls.

Herman singled and walked against his old Panthers batterymate as the Jamestown Tarp Skunks beat the Niagara Falls Americans 3-1 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action at Sal Maglie Stadium.

Colin Bolla was lights-out on the mound for Jamestown. The left-hander took a perfect game into the fourth inning and finished with a complete-game two-hitter, allowing just one run while walking one and striking out eight.

The second-place Tarp Skunks improved to 22-12 on the season, 1 1/2 games behind first-place Batavia in the West Division.

Jamestown opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Brady McGuire led off with a walk, stole second, went to third on a Nolan Smith groundout and scored on Ben Slanker’s RBI groundout.

In Herman’s first at-bat of the game in the top of the third inning, he broke up Ondus’ no-hit effort with a line-drive single on the first pitch he saw. Herman then stole second on an 0-2 pitch and took third on a dropped-third strike, but was stranded.

In his second at-bat, Smith, whose father, Tim, coached Ondus at Gowanda, singled on the first pitch he saw, but was stranded at third.

Grant Moore broke up Bolla’s perfect-game bid with an infield single with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Moore — who entered the game with 33 stolen bases on the season — was picked off one pitch later.

Herman walked in his second at-bat with two outs in the top of the fifth and stole second on a 1-2 pitch, but was stranded on a groundout.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Americans’ Gavin Boyle walked and Greydon Miller reached on an error to open the inning, but Bolla got out of the jam with a strikeout and a double play.

McGuire led off the top of the sixth inning with a single and stole second before going to third on a one-out groundout and scoring on Justin Bremner’s two-out RBI single. An error allowed Bremner to take second on the play before Borchardt followed with an RBI double to deep center field.

All told, Ondus went six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out two.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nick Paszt was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a flyout and scored on a wild pitch to give the Americans their only run.

Aiden Klimtzak walked two in three scoreless innings or relief for Niagara Falls, but the Americans’ offense couldn’t solve Bolla, who faced just three batters over the minimum in the game.

The teams match up again at 6:30 p.m. today at Diethrick Park in Jamestown.

Starting at $3.50/week.
