Skunks hold off Niagara in 7-4 win

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks jumped out to a 7-0 lead midway through the game and held on late for a 7-4 victory over the Niagara Ironbacks in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Thursday evening at Diethrick Park.

Brady McGuire went 2 for 5 with a pair of RBIs, Nolan Smith was 2 for 4 with an RBI, Nathan Borchardt doubled and drove in a run, and Jakob Haynes tripled, drove in a run and scored a run for the Tarp Skunks (3-1).

Jamestown scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and four in the bottom of the fourth. Niagara rallied for a run in the top of the fifth inning before a three-run top of the ninth.

Easton Barnett tossed three shutout innings with a strikeout while allowing three hits to earn the win for Jamestown. Cole Schwochow struck out the final batter of the game for the save.

Ethan Wolf took the loss for the Ironbacks (0-1), playing in their inaugural game in the league. Niagara totaled just seven singles in the game with Connor Gaitens going 2 for 2 with a run scored.

The Tarp Skunks return to action at 6:30 p.m. today at McDonough Park in Geneva when they will take on the Red Wings. They are also on the road Sunday at Sal Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls to take on the Americans at 4:05 p.m. before returning home next Tuesday to host Niagara Falls at 11 a.m.
