YOUNGSVILLE — It wasn’t pretty, but the Youngsville Eagles completed a doubleheader sweep with a 16-14 victory over the Jamestown (Pennsylvania) Muskies on Thursday at Davis Street Field.

A crazy game saw the Eagles (8-6) build a commanding eight-run lead only to watch the Muskies score nine runs in the top of the sixth to take a 14-13 lead. The Eagles responded with a three-run bottom of the sixth to retake the lead and the game was called due to darkness during the first Jamestown batter of the top of the seventh.

The frenzied win capped off a wild day for Youngsville, which didn’t find out it was playing a doubleheader until around 9 a.m. The Eagles were originally scheduled to play the Muskies today, but the Muskies are making up a region game that day and opted to come Thursday after their originally scheduled game with Cochranton.

For the majority of Thursday’s game, Youngsville had things firmly in hand. The Eagles led 4-1 after the first, thanks to a David Manning RBI groundout, RBI singles from Braydon Baker and Josh Pikna and a fourth run on an error.

The Muskies tied the game in the top of the second, but it wasn’t long before Youngsville was back ahead, 8-4. Baker hit a bases clearing double for three of the runs and Pikna delivered another RBI single that put the hosts in control.

The game stood at 10-5 entering the bottom of the fifth and it started to look like Youngsville would put the game away via the 10-run rule. Manning and Talon Mesel scored on passed balls and Bryce Spinks had an RBI single that made it 13-5 through five innings.

Then … the wheels fell off.

Starting pitcher Cole Johnson reached his pitch limit and Mesel was called on to pitch. What followed were four hits, three walks and three errors that eventually led to a total of nine runs that put the Muskies on top 14-13 with darkness looming and the bottom of the sixth coming up.

To its credit, Youngsville didn’t roll over and bounced back with a rally of its own.

With one out, Manning singled and moved to third on a steal and passed ball before Mesel reached with a walk. Baker followed with a clutch two-run single that plated his fifth and sixth RBI of the game and put the Eagles back on top by a 15-14 count.

Baker scored moments later on Spinks’ RBI single that gave Youngsville an important insurance run.

After the sixth ended, the umpires met briefly with the coaches and the decision was made to start the top of the seventh. However, four pitches into that inning the game would ultimately be called due to darkness.

Baker’s huge offensive game included a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with four runs scored and six RBIs. Spinks also had a huge game ending 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Manning and Pikna also had multi-hit games.

After a busy three-day stretch, the Eagles are off until Monday when they visit Lawrence Park and the Iroquois Braves for a region showdown.

Starting at $3.50/week.
