Eagles fall to .500 after 5-4 loss to Union City
YOUNGSVILLE — Union City’s Aiden Shuman hit a two-run homer in the first inning to put Youngsville in a hole it couldn’t climb out of during a 5-4 Eagles loss Wednesday at Davis Street Field in Youngsville.
The Bears victory gave them a season sweep over Youngsville with both victories coming by a single run.
Youngsville (6-6) got the first two outs of the game on strikeouts Wednesday before the Bears strung together some two-out hits to take early command of the game. Trevin Capela had a single and scored all the way from first when Luke Wright’s towering bloop single fell into no man’s land in shallow right.
Shuman followed with his two-run bomb to left and another double from Blake Turner chased Youngsville starter David Manning from the game in the first inning with James Johnson coming in to pitch.
Trailing 3-0 early, Youngsville squandered a chance to get on the board in the bottom of the first when a base running mistake led to the first out of the inning at home plate bringing a promising Eagles start to an end.
The Eagles would get on the board in the bottom of the second when Talon Mesel led off with a bunt single and moved to third on a steal and a passed ball. Moments later, Mesel would score on another passed ball to make it 3-1 through two innings.
Union City quickly got its run back in the top of the third when Capela drew a one out walk and stole second before scoring on Wright’s second RBI of the game.
After having a two out rally put upon them in the first, the Eagles out together one of their own in the bottom of the fourth. With two out and nobody on, Braydon Baker hit a gap shot double to set up an RBI single from second baseman Dylan DePasquale that made it 4-2.
Once again, the Bears got the run back in their next at-bat taking advantage of two Youngsville errors to score an unearned run and make it 5-2.
The two-out rally that worked so well in the fourth for Youngsville came through again during the bottom of the fifth. With two out, James Johnson, Cole Johnson, Manning and Mesel clicked off four straight singles that plated a pair of runs and made it 5-4 with two innings to play.
James Johnson reached his 100-pitch limit in the top of the sixth and exited with two outs and the bases loaded. Manning returned to the mound and got Union City’s Cooper Fox to line out to third baseman Cole Johnson to keep it a one-run game.
The Bears flirted with breaking the game open once more in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out on a Capela single, Wright double and intentional walk of Shuman. Manning clamped down and got a pair of strikeouts and a fielders choice at home to keep it 5-4 with Youngsville’s best hitters coming to the plate in the bottom of the seventh.
Despite the favorable lineup for the Eagles, Union City’s Shuman entered the game at pitcher and set the Eagles down in order to end the game.
Youngsville returns to action on Thursday hosting a third game in as many days against District 9’s Oswayo Valley.
WARREN FALLS IN EXTRAS
ERIE — Erie High scored in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday to hand Warren a 2-1 Region 6 loss.
“Went much better today,” said Warren coach John White, whose Dragons are 0-14 overall and 0-10 in the region. “Zane Carlson threw an absolute gem today. We did everything we needed to do to win the game. We were great in the field, we had great at-bats at the plate and did our jobs. There’s some small things we can work on, but overall we played really well.”
Carlson threw six innings, scattering five hits and four walks, striking out three. Felix Valencia struck out three over 1-2/3 innings in the loss. He also had two of Warren’s seven hits.
“We had a two-run single get taken away by a rough call, but we can’t control that,” said White. “We need to be better at bouncing back after things like that, but other than that, we played a great game today.”
Carter Cochran, Eli Snyder, and Jacob Franklin reached base twice each for Warren.
Erie improves to 3-10 overall and 2-7 in Region 6.
KNIGHTS BLANKED BY LAKERS
Eisenhower faced undefeated Mercyhurst Prep and the Lakers jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning and never looked back in an 18-0 four-inning win.
Mercyhurst Prep (14-0) scored four runs in the first, two in the second and did the most damage in the top of the third inning when it scored eight runs to put the game out of reach.
The Lakers were a hitting machine as they collected 21 hits, while holding the Knights hitless.
Eisenhower (1-10) returns to action today when it travels to Iroqouis for a 4 p.m. game.
