HERMITAGE — Three Sheffield wrestlers advanced to the second day of the 27-team Hickory Invitational on Saturday at Hickory High School; Hayden Holden finished fifth and Alex Marfink sixth for the Wolverines.

Holden was 3-1 at 133 pounds on Friday, including two pins and a technical fall victory. His loss came in the quarterfinals to Port Allegany’s Ian O’Shea by a 10-6 decision. Holden earned his fourth win of the weekend by pin to advance to the consolation semifinals, getting pinned in the second period by Hickory’s Brody Bishop. He bounced back to win the 5th/6th match, 11-6, over Central Clarion’s Grayson Aaron.

“It was a loaded bracket,” said Sheffield coach Tom Holden.

Marfink was 3-0 with three pins on Friday to advance to the semifinals at 152; he lost by tech fall in the third period to Hickory’s Logan Rodgers, and then lost again in the consolation semifinals to Commodore Perry’s Brayden Booher. In the 5th/6th match, he was pinned in the third period by St. Marys’ Jackson Wehler to finish 3-3.

Brayden Letendre was 3-1 with two pins on Friday at 127 pounds, but he “didn’t make weight” on Saturday, according to Coach Holden.

Though they didn’t advance to Saturday’s rounds, Zack Barnes (1-2) earned a win via pin on Friday at 160 pounds, and freshman Joby Hilyer earned his first varsity win (at 189), finishing 1-2.

Sheffield next wrestles on Tuesday at Ridgway.
