ERIE — Three doubles pairs from the Warren’s girls tennis team traveled to the Westwood Racquet Club on Thursday to compete in the D10 doubles championships. The third-seeded team of Lucy Harrison and Alannah Garza advanced to the 3A semifinals before being eliminated.

Warren’s No. 3 team consisting of Maddy McDunn and Anna Courson met with Dubois top pair in the opening round, falling 8-6.

“Our girls played well in this one and it just came down to a couple points down the stretch,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino.

Warren’s No. 2 team was made up of Ella Card and Grace Carr; they fell in the opening round, 8-3 to Fairview’s second team.

Harrison and Garza kicked off their day with an 8-3 win in the first round over Fairview’s No. 3 team. After this, they met up with the McDowell’s 2 in the quarterfinals, and “it was one of the most entertaining matches of the day,” said Pellegrino. “McDowell managed to pull a 6-3 lead and had game points in the 10th game, but Lucy and Alannah saved game point and won the next three games, tying things up at six-all. From here, it was a back-and-forth battle and, at 8-8, a tiebreaker was played. With some big-time serves, our girls came out on top, 7-5, giving them a birth into the semifinals against top-seeded Fairview. This was a great comeback win for Lucy and Alannah; they are two of the most competitive girls on the roster and saved their best tennis when the points mattered most.

“In the semis, our girls played well, but you could tell they used a lot of gas in the previous match,” added Pellegrino. “Fairview got the upper hand early, grabbing 3-0 leads in both sets. Lucy and Alannah were in every game but fell to the top seed, 3-6, 1-6.

“We are extremely pleased with how these two came together this tournament and proud of their final results,” said Pellegrino. “They played some high-level tennis and represented us well, giving us another deep district run.

“This now puts an end to the tennis season,” said the coach. “We finish with an overall record of 9-6 and made it to the semifinals of both singles and doubles this year. We continue to be one of the top teams in D10 tennis and are extremely proud of our girls and the season they had this year.”

No. 2-seeded McDowell I (Lina Warrier-Mary Jane Moubarak) defeated No. 1 Fairview I (Emiko Munekata-MacKenzee Jewell), 7-5, 6-2, for the 3A title.
