Warren sweeps Elk County Catholic
Warren’s girls tennis team cruised to a 5-0 sweep of Elk County Catholic on Monday at Betts Park.
“We have a busy schedule of matches this week, so it’s always nice to start the week off with a win,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino.
Lucy Harrison kicked things off by defeating Grace Ames 6-0, 6-0 at the first-singles slot.
Playing second singles, Ella Card defeated Melena Piccirillo 6-2, 6-3.
In third singles, Alannah Garza stepped up and earned a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 win over Anna Biandi.
“Alannah is our best doubles player, but when we had to make a last-minute lineup adjustment due to a sick player, she stepped up and offered to play (at third singles). This sophomore already shows great leadership qualities.”
In first doubles, the pair of Maddy McDunn and Sarah Harvey defeated Audree Meyer and Arianna Gurosik 6-3, 6-2.
In second doubles, the pair of Grace Carlson and Anna Courson swept the pair of Emma Repki and Jolene Rippey 6-0, 6-0.
“These two played lights-out tonight and were in sync the entire match,” said Pellegrino.
The Dragons moved to 6-1 on the season and will be back at home today against the defending D10 3A champion, Fairview.
“We split with them last season and have always had tight, competitive matches with them over the years,” said Pellegrino. “We have a lot of respect for their program and look forward to the matchup. … With it being our first year in 3A, this will be our first test to see where we fair in the district.”
