Opening losses
Conneaut rolls past Warren 61-0
After a close loss to Conneaut a season ago, Warren was outplayed handily in this year’s season opener, 61-0 on Friday at War Memorial Field.
Senior running back Joseph Furgiuele had four first-half touchdowns, finishing with 164 yards rushing and 121 receiving for the game for Conneaut, which led 35-0 by halftime.
The Eagles (2-7 a season ago) had 337 total yards in the first half, including 166 yards passing and two touchdowns from senior quarterback Ben Easler.
“I think you take a glimpse of what you want to become,” said Warren coach Cody Bupp, “but this is going to be a common theme throughout the season; this is their senior group that they took lumps with in their younger years, and now they’re building.”
Conneaut held Warren to negative yardage in the first half, including three third-down sacks and a fourth-down stop after Warren recovered a fumble deep in Conneaut territory.
Warren had 14 yards rushing for the game and didn’t complete a pass in four attempts to fall to 0-1.
“The only way is up,” said Bupp. “We’re building still off of last year, so everything is brick by brick. … But at the end of the day, there’s a victor and there’s not, and we’re on the wrong end again. … (We) execute at practice, but now we have to be able to put it out here.”
