Tarp Skunks split doubleheader in Elmira on Sunday

ELMIRA, N.Y. — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks split a doubleheader with the Elmira Pioneers on Sunday at Dunn Field, winning the opener 5-0 before falling in the nightcap 9-3.

Shaniel Maldonado (Mercer Community College) threw a seven-inning shutout in the first game, striking out one while allowing three hits and not walking a batter.

Jamestown went ahead 2-0 in the first inning. Nigel Sebastianelli (Niagara County Community College) led off with a single and Austin Matranga (Grand Canyon University) followed with a single before Bobby Stang’s (University of Dayton) one-out RBI single. Aidan Wallace (University of Tampa) followed with a sacrifice fly.

The Tarp Skunks added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Matranga singled and scored on a Stang sacrifice fly in the fifth; DJ Stoianovich (SUNY Brockport) doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth; and Henry Juan (Williams College) was hit by a pitch and scored on a Leo Doyle (Wagner College) RBI single in the seventh.

Matranga finished 3 for 4 to raise his average to an even .300 at the time.

Elmira took a 6-0 lead through four innings and added three more in the sixth in Game 2.

Jamestown totaled just four hits with Sebastianelli, Stang, Maldonado and Stoianovich each having a single. Doyle drove in a pair of runs despite going 0 for 4 in the game.

Will Saxenmeyer (Wagner College) started on the mound for the Tarp Skunks, allowing six runs on five hits and six walks while striking out three. Hayden Givens-Craig (University of Tampa) threw the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out one.

Fourth-place Jamestown sits at 17-22 in the West Division with five games remaining. The top four teams in the division advance to next week’s playoffs. The Tarp Skunks will visit McDonough Park in Geneva today to take on the fifth-place Red Wings at 7:05 p.m.
