Youngsville boys fall to Cochranton
YOUNGSVILLE — Some bad breaks on good shots and a large disparity at the free throw line were too much for the Youngsville Eagles to overcome during a 68-48 loss to the Cochranton Cardinals Tuesday at Youngsville High School.
The Cardinals shot 34 free throws to Youngsville’s eight during the contest which included several calls deemed questionable by the Eagles fans, players and coaches. Three Youngsville primary scorers including Nathan Lucks, Carson Chase and Ethan Beers all fouled out before the game was over.
The game was the last home contest in the careers of both Lucks and Chase who went down swinging as did the remainder of the Eagles roster.
Cochranton carved out a seven-point lead in the opening quarter before buckets by Lucks and Beers closed the lead to 15-12 at the end of the opening stanza.
Youngsville got its first lead of the game with 6:28 remaining in the first half when Carson Chase hit his second three-pointer of the quarter. The Cardinals answered with a 7-0 run and the Eagles were held without a point for over four minutes until Rylan Benton canned a three to cut Cochranton’s lead to four at halftime.
After intermission, Cochranton’s Walker Carroll began putting his stamp on the game. Carroll finished with a game-high 28 points and was able to shoot 13 free throws during the victory.
As the fouls began piling up on Youngsville’s side, the lead continued to grow on Cochranton as the foul situation and some unlucky breaks on good shots made sure the Eagles never got closer than 13 over the final eight minutes.
Chase finished with a team-best 17 points and Benton added 14 of his own. Lucks had nine points, Beers had 6 and Cash Moore also scored for the Eagles.
Cochranton won the junior varsity game, 26-11. Braydon Baker had 5 points for the Eagles and Rodney Rowland, Hudson Haight and Josh Pikna also scored in defeat.
Youngsville completes its regular season on Friday when it visits county rival Eisenhower.
