OIL CITY — In a Region 6 battle of 12-win teams, Oil City scored on its last possession and Warren didn’t, with the Oilers holding on for a 44-42 win on Friday at Oil City Area Senior High School.
Warren led 40-35 after three quarters, but managed just one more field goal, and the Oilers battled back to tie the score at 42-42 with 5:15 left in the game. Sayyid Donald’s three-point play underneath gave the Oilers momentum that the Dragons would try to stop.
Warren played the stall game, holding the ball for nearly four minutes until a turnover with 1:16 left gave Oil City possession without a Dragons’ shot.
Oil City held until Ethen Knox put in a driving bucket on an inbounds play for a 44-42 lead with 16 seconds left.
“They executed their inbounds play to get a bucket at the end, (and) we did not,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the region (both Region 6 losses by two points).
“When you play good teams, you have to make less mistakes than they do,” said Coach Berdine. “That wasn’t the case tonight. We talked in the locker room before the game, we were going to see who handles difficult better because I knew they were going to be physical and make it difficult for us compared to the last two games. We needed to be the better defensive team. Don’t think that was the case tonight, either.”
Brady Berdine scored 11 of his team-high 15 points in Warren’s 19-point second quarter, and the Dragons led by three points at halftime. Tommy Nyquist’s second 3-pointer of the game helped push that lead to five points after three.
Konnor Hoffman had Warren’s only field goal in the fourth quarter; he finished with 9 points.
Will McMahon led the Oilers (13-3, 4-0) with 13 points. He had three 3-pointers and 11 points in Oil City’s 14-12 first quarter. Donald had 5 of the Oilers’ nine fourth-quarter points and finished with 11.

Cambridge Springs used a 17-4 run in the first quarter to build a 20-10 lead before the Knights closed with a 7-0 run to narrow the score to 20-17 at the close of the quarter.
The Blue Devils used a balanced scoring attack in the second quarter as five players scored to give the hosts a 33-28 lead at the half.
The third quarter saw the Knights fall behind by 18 points. Eisenhower had no answer for the Blue Devils’ Owen Reilly, who hit back-to-back 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the quarter to help the Blue Devils open up a 54-36 lead.
Eisenhower began to trap the ball in the fourth quarter and cut the Blue Devils’ lead to seven points late in the game. The Knights were forced to foul, which sent Cambridge Springs to the free-throw line where the Blue Devils went 4 for 4 in the closing minute.
