Dragons jump on Corry for region win

CORRY — Five Dragons scored in double figures in a lopsided 79-62 Region 6 win over Corry on Tuesday at Corry Area High School.

Warren outscored the Beavers 52-19 over the second and third quarters — and led by 36 points after three — to improve to 13-3 and 3-2 in the region.

“I thought we made some good adjustments versus their press-break during the first quarter, which led to a lot of success in the second and third quarters when we broke the game wide open,” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine. “In the fourth quarter, we played a lot of kids who don’t play a lot of varsity minutes, so the final score doesn’t really show how lopsided this game got to after the first quarter.”

Konnor Hoffman had 9 of Warren’s 20 first-quarter points as the Dragons held a three-point lead after one.

Braylon Barnes had 8 second-quarter points and Chase Sitler added 6, and Warren built a 43-25 lead by halftime.

“We stress the first three minutes of the third quarter — always coming out trying to reestablish what we worked hard to create in terms of tempo and offense,” said Berdine, whose Dragons put the game away with a 29-11 third. “Tommy (Nyquist) hit three threes right out of the gate to bust the game wide open.”

Nyquist finished with four 3-pointers in the quarter and six of Warren’s nine threes for the game for 20 points. Hoffman ended with 18 points and a great all-around game passing, rebounding, and on defense. Braylon Barnes finished with 11 points, Brady Berdine 10, and Sitler had all 10 of his points in the first half.

“Offensively, we mixed things up with some different sets tonight, trying to get some guys jump-started early,” said Coach Berdine.

Markus Lambert led Corry (12-5, 2-3) with 21 points, and Kamdyn Moon had four 3-pointers and 16 points. Corry had 10 threes in the loss.

Jacob McMeans’ 14 points paced Warren’s junior varsity team in a 37-33 comeback win.
