Eagles swept by Corry on the mats
CORRY — The injury bug continues to nip at the Youngsville wrestling team as the Eagles sent just five wrestlers to the mat during a 78-0 loss to Corry Thursday at Corry Area High School.
“Dressing only five kids is a testament to how physical wrestling is,” said Youngsville coach David Myers. “We’re hoping to get healthy over the holiday break and get more competitive in the second half of the season.”
To make matters worse, the Eagles were matched up against a powerful Beavers team on Thursday.
“Corry boasts a lineup full of regional and state qualifiers,” said Myers. “They’re well coached and very physical.”
All five matches on Thursday were decided by first period pins. Despite that, Myers was pleased with how hard his team wrestled, especially Cole Johnson at 121 pounds and Sarah Blauser at 127 pounds.
“Cole is quickly becoming a leader on the team. He’s still adjusting to varsity level competition but he’s dedicated to putting the work in,” said Myers. “Sarah is a first year wrestler with a lot of fire. She’s picking things up quickly.”
Youngsville returns to action over the break with the Paul Clough Memorial Junior Varsity/Junior High Tournament scheduled for December 29 at Youngsville High School.
