Five Dragon volleyball standouts recognized by PVCA
On the eve of Warren’s second-ever trip to the PIAA playoffs, no less than five Lady Dragons have been named PVCA District 10 all-stars.
Senior middle hitter Kylie Fehlman and senior libero Summer Lucks were named to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association (PVCA) Class AAA first team, and senior outside hitter Alexia Bowers, junior outside hitter Maddy Jones, and junior setter Lindsay Madigan are second-teamers.
“What’s nice about these all-star selections is they are chosen by the very coaches in District 10 in front of whom these girls have played tons of games this season between the scrimmages, tournaments, league and non-league matches,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan, whose D10 3A champion Dragons (15-2) host North Catholic (18-1) at 6 p.m. today at Warren Area High School. “It’s also a nice compliment to have almost half of the AAA all-stars come from one team, but they have each earned it individually. Being part of a team that has worked so well together is also a tribute to all the players on the team, and contributes to the individuals being chosen as all-stars.”
In 104 sets, Fehlman has 251 kills and 68 blocks and Lucks 556 digs and 55 service aces.
“Last year, Kylie and Summer were also on the first team and they have not only kept up their level of play, but have improved considerably. Each stands out on the court for their individual play, although they have very much opposite roles on the team. Both are crucial to the team’s offense and defense — Kylie with her blocking, attacking, and net presence, (and) Summer with her serving, serve-receive passing, and back-row defense.”
Madigan has 892 assists at setter and 2,338 attempts. She also serves at a 94% rate with 55 aces and has 188 digs.
“Lindsay also made the all-star team last season, and has also improved considerably this year,” said Dolan, “especially running a diverse offense and improving everyone’s attack efficiency by putting up so many great sets. She’s also a great server and defender as well.”
Bowers (257) and Jones (251) have combined for over 500 kills.
“It’s great to see Alexia and Maddy recognized, as both have been so solid and reliable on the outside, each putting up big kill numbers as well as making plays all over the court,” said Dolan. “They are both very athletic and contribute in so many ways on the court.
“Congratulations to each of them; they’ve performed at such a high level on the court and, more importantly, they have been great leaders to the younger players and helped continue the fantastic culture on the volleyball team,” added Dolan.
PVCA’s announced D10 Class AAA first team also includes Conneaut outside hitter Lainie Harrington, and Meadville outside hitter Emma Parks, libero Kendall Mealy, and setter Elliott Schleicher on the first team. Grove City setter Abby Berry and Conneaut setter Payten Karastury and libero Paris Karastury are on the second team.
Eisenhower was represented on the D10 Class A first-team all-stars by junior middle hitter Caroline Smyth.
