Tarp Skunks drop game to Red Wings; doubleheader set for today
GENEVA, N.Y. — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks lost for the seventh time in their last 10 games with a 16-5 eight-inning Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League loss to the Geneva Red Wings on Tuesday night.
Jamestown fell into a virtual tie for fourth place with the Auburn Doubledays at 21-17 in the West Division while last-place Geneva improved to 11-29. Fifth-place Niagara beat Batavia 9-2 to improve to 20-17, just one game behind the Tarp Skunks in the win column. The top four teams in the division qualify for the postseason.
Jamestown has four games remaining. After a doubleheader today, the Tarp Skunks travel to Niagara on Thursday before hosting the Power on Friday in the regular-season finale.
Jamestown was out of it early Tuesday.
After leading 1-0 following the top of the first inning, the Tarp Skunks gave up the next six runs to trail 6-1.
Jamestown scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 6-4, but the Red Wings put up five in the bottom of the fifth, three in the bottom of the seventh and two in the bottom of the eighth to win.
The Tarp Skunks’ Grady Mee (Western Michigan University) walked and scored on a Jake Kernodle (Princeton University) grounder in the first inning.
In the fifth, Jamestown’s Drew Garth (Washington & Jefferson College) walked and Colin Houck (East Stroudsburg University) singled before Mee walked to load the bases with one out. Tommy Googins (Princeton University) followed with a grounder that turned into two runs after an error and Kernodle later hit an RBI single.
In the sixth, the Tarp Skunks’ Zack Kent (Wagner College) walked and scored on an RBI double by Garth.
None of Jamestown’s three pitchers were effective. Ryan Bilka (Wagner College) threw just an inning and allowed the first run before Frank Villella (Nova Southeastern University) gave up 10 runs (eight earned) in four innings on six hits and five walks. He struck out three. Houck, normally a position player, threw the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on four hits and two walks while striking out one.
Jason Shockley homered, doubled and drove in three runs; Wyatt Patchett homered, doubled and drove in two runs; Ryan Knight hit a pinch-hit two-run home run; and Nate Milk singled and drove in two runs for Geneva.
