Warren’s Harrison a champ again

GENEVA, OHIO — Been there, done that.

Warren swim coach Russ Beyer isn’t taking for granted that, on Friday, his junior all-state swimmer Hugh Harrison won his third straight District 10 championship in the 200-yard individual medley.

“He’s been there, done that, and his eyes are on a bigger prize,” said Beyer. “I think he’s looking state title, All-American status, and that would be huge.”

Harrison’s first two D10 titles in the 200-yard individual medley were in Class 3A. This time, Harrison won the 2A championship in the D10 meet-record time of 1:53.38 at Spire Institute. Harrison beat the previous record-holder, Cathedral Prep’s Mitchell Bradford, by nearly 4 seconds on Friday.

“Things are clicking,” said Beyer. “It was a good first day.”

While the boys 200-yard freestyle relay team of Harrison, Jacob Retterer, Jarod Peterson and Drake Niemitz swam its fastest time of the season to finish fifth, it’s a waiting game to see if the team’s time will be enough to join the automatic D10 champions among the top 32 at states. In that race, Harrison — the first leg — broke the WAHS 50-yard freestyle school record by swimming a 21.07. He holds nearly every individual boys school mark as a junior and has a chance to break the 100-yard freestyle mark on Saturday.

“The 400 free relay for the guys (on Saturday) is possibly our best chance for a relay,” said Beyer. “The girls 200 medley relay; they were the first event (Friday), and they really set the tone for us. They dropped 3 or 4 seconds and finished sixth. They went 1:56; I think it’s going to be close. In the last couple years, 1:57 made it (to states by qualifying time).”

Both freshmen, Niemitz made the podium on Friday with a fourth-place finish in the boys 200-yard freestyle, and Lucy Harrison made it with a sixth in the girls 200-yard individual medley.

“We have a lot more to give tomorrow,” said Beyer.
