ERIE — Warren junior diver Izzy Heacox has had a heck of an extended weekend. Come to think of it, so has junior teammate Laney Gatto and the rest of the Lady Dragons’ diving team.
On Friday, Heacox won the 2023 McDowell Invitational with a score of 194.15 points, and the Lady Dragons finished first as a team with 57 points to second-place General McLane’s 30.
In a field of 14 individual divers at McDowell Intermediate High School, Gatto was second with 188.05 points, freshman teammate Bailey Williams fourth at 166.70 points, and sophomore Ellie Yeager 12th at 132.80 points.
“Izzy and Laney have been battling back and forth,” said Warren diving coach Brandon Gregg, with the District 10 Class 2A Girls Diving Championships at 6:30 p.m. Friday, also at McDowell, in a 6-dive format.
A back-to-back D10 2A champion, Warren’s Katie Madigan graduated and moved on to dive at Clarion University. That leaves an opening for a first-time champion.
“Fairview has good female divers, but we are neck and neck,” said Gregg.
On Monday at Cathedral Prep, Heacox and Gatto finished 1-2 again. “They were within 5 points tonight,” said Gregg. “Izzy won, but by a hair.”
Heacox finished with a score of 201.25, Gatto at 197.75, and Williams was third at 167.
Gatto’s high point total for a meet this season was 234.54 and Heacox 212.39.
