MEADVILLE — What better way to start the defense of your District 10 title than with… well… defense.
Warren’s girls basketball team did just that in its 45-21 D10 4A playoff quarterfinal win over Grove City on Saturday at Meadville Area Senior High School.
“Very proud of our defense,” said Warren coach Lisa LaVan, whose Dragons held the Eagles to single digits in every quarter. “Alyssa (Farr) and Emily Davidson held Piper (Como) scoreless. She averages 15 (points per game). Sammie (Ruhlman) held (Delaney) Callahan to just two. She averages 11 a game.”
With the win — Warren’s 10th straight to move its record to 17-6, the Dragons will meet Harbor Creek (18-5) in the D10 semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cathedral Prep’s Hagerty Family Events Center in Erie.
Harbor Creek defeated General McLane, 56-26, in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Fairview (17-8) will meet Conneaut (15-8) in the other 4A semifinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Meadville.

Farr and Alana Stuart connected on 3-pointers in Warren’s 13-8 first quarter. Point guard Sammie Ruhlman scored all 5 of her points in a 12-7 second quarter that gave the Dragons a 10-point halftime lead.
That pesky Warren defense held Grove City (10-11) to three more field goals the rest of the game.
“‘GG’ (senior Gracie Ruhlman) set the tone early with stepping up to take those two charges,” said LaVan.
Stuart led Warren — which had 10 players in the scoring column — with 11 points. Gracie Ruhlman had eight rebounds, Halle Kuzminski seven rebounds, and Sammie Ruhlman six assists.
“Year after year, the main constant has always been our defense,” said LaVan. “On defense, it isn’t really about having any particular goal other than suffocating another team.”
That type of defense will be needed against a semifinal opponent in Harbor Creek that jumped out to a big first-quarter lead over McLane.
“They are good,” said LaVan of the Huskies. “Athletic. Quick. Should be a good game.”
