9 Dragons’ wrestlers advance to second day
MEADVILLE — Having already won more dual matches than all of last year, Warren’s wrestling team is showing some tournament success as well.
On Friday, nine of 10 Dragons advanced to today’s day-two action at the 14-team Tool City Tournament at Meadville Area Senior High School.
Adika Fiscus at 109 pounds and Damien Sanchez at 172 pounds are both 2-0 and move on to the semifinals.
Sanchez had a first-period pin followed by an 11-8 decision over Union City’s Drake Applequist in the quarterfinals.
Fiscus earned a 16-0 technical-fall win over Eisenhower’s Shawn Miller. He then pinned Ridgway’s Michael Copello in the first period of the 107 quarterfinals.
Seven Dragons are 1-1, set to compete in the consolation rounds on Saturday, including Ryan Fitzsimmons 114 pounds, Cameron Williams 127 pounds, Josh Letko 139 pounds, Jordan Tuttle 145 pounds, Grant Heeter 152 pounds, Evan Swanson 160 pounds, and Joey Krall 215 pounds. Fitzsimmons, Letko, and Heeter lost in their respective quarterfinal matches on Friday.
Connor Zaffino finished 0-2 at 133 pounds, “but wrestled really well,” said Warren coach Glenn Baldensperger.
“It was a great day,” he added. “The team is wrestling really hard. I’m extremely happy with our efforts.”
There will not be a repeat team champion at the 43rd annual Tool City Tournament as last year’s winner, Cochranton, is not entered. Other teams competing (not mentioned above) include Cambridge Springs, Conneaut, Girard, Howland, Maplewood, Meadville, Penns Valley, Saegertown, Seneca, Titusville, Westmont Hilltop and Youngsville.
