Warren Dragons improve to 2-0 with win
UNION CITY — Warren head coach Glenn Baldensperger is the first to acknowledge how far his wrestlers have come and the first to recognize how far they have to go.
On Wednesday, the Dragons defeated Union City 43-25 to improve to 2-0 early in the season. More than wins, Baldensperger is focusing on “controlling what we can control,” he said.
“We have a good group of kids,” added Baldensperger. “We’re trying to develop a core group of kids that have a determination and purpose (in what they do).”
Warren is next at the Southern Tier Wrestling Officials Association Tournament this weekend at Jamestown Community College and hosts Eisenhower on Tuesday.
In the victory over Union City, the Bears got up 13-0 before Warren’s Damien Sanchez earned a 14-2 major decision at 189 pounds.
Down by a 19-4 team score, freshman Joey Krall earned a second-period pin for Warren at 285 for his first varsity win.
Adika Fiscus’ first-period pin at 107 pounds pulled the Dragons to within 19-16. Ryan Fitzsimmons followed with a 12-0 major at 114 to give Warren its first lead 20-19.
Two of the next three weight classes went to Warren via forfeit for a 32-25 lead, and the Dragons put it away from there.
Josh Letko’s technical fall in the third period at 139 pounds and Conner Zaffino’s pin at 145 gave Warren the 18-point win.
