Warren girls crowned District 10 3A champs in soccer

District 10 playoff matchups beginning next week have been released for Warren Area High School boys soccer and volleyball.

At the same time, Warren’s girls soccer team has learned it is the District 10 3A champion by default, and will focus on advancing in the PIAA tourney.

BOYS SOCCER

Playing first for Warren in the playoffs will be the boys soccer team, only the time and location are unknown. The Dragons are the sixth seed in the D10 2A playoffs at 13-5 overall — the top 2A team out of Region 4 at 12-2. Warren is slated to face the Region 2 champs in Slippery Rock, the bracket’s third seed at 14-3-1 overall.

“We have not played Slippery Rock High School since 2019,” said Warren coach Denny Flatt. “I think it makes it more captivating when you play a team you are not familiar with. During the past six seasons, we had to get past Cathedral Prep to advance; for obvious reasons this was a difficult task. There are a lot of quality teams in our district, but we are focused on Wednesday’s match. We do not have many shared opponents, so it is hard to get a read on Slippery Rock. Records and stats now mean nothing; every team is 0-0. The emphasis will be playing our game, with the realization there is no second chance in the playoffs. If you don’t ‘bring it’ for 80 minutes, you will go home. No matter what the sport, your goal is to peak in the playoffs and establish momentum. I think we are on track to do just that. Our captains have done a great job mentoring the younger players and leading by example. This hands-on leadership style must continue in the postseason.

“We tell our players to control the things you can control and play with conviction,” Flatt added. “I can assure you this team will leave everything on the field and leave nothing in the tank.”

The first round takes place on Monday with the schedule listed below.

No. 6 Eisenhower will take on No. 3 Mercer in Tuesday’s 5:30 p.m. Class 1A quarterfinal at Titusville High School. The winner will take on No. 2 Wilmington in Thursday’s semifinals.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Warren volleyball (11-4 overall and 5-3 in Region 5) is the third seed in the D10 3A bracket. The Dragons will open in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Thursday against No. 6-seeded Cathedral Prep at Meadville Area Senior High.

Warren swept Prep (4-13 overall, 2-6 in Region 5) earlier this month at WAHS.

“The seeding played out like we expected,” said Warren coach Mike Dolan. “In a way, it’s good that we get to play next week instead of getting a bye like Meadville did, because they just beat us. Now they have to wait two weeks to play. If we can come out and play like we are capable, then I like our chances next week and beyond. I think what we should take from these past two weeks is that, although we lost, we can definitely play with the best teams around. I’m really hoping that we can get some momentum and confidence this week and play our best volleyball going forward. Who knows where that may lead?”

The winner will face No. 2-seeded Meadville (11-3 overall and 7-1 in Region 5) on Nov. 3 in the 3A semifinals.

In Class 1A, No. 7 Eisenhower will take on No. 2 West Middlesex at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cochranton High School. The winner will take on the winner of No. 6 Jamestown and No. 3 Cochranton on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

GIRLS SOCCER

Warren’s girls soccer team (9-9 overall) will advance to the PIAA 3A playoffs for the fourth straight year as the D10 champ — this year without an opponent in the D10 championship. Last year’s D10 final opponent, Meadville (2-16 overall), opted out of the playoffs, handing The Dragons the title.

“We are disappointed that Meadville opted out of the 3A playoffs,” said Warren coach Jeremy Bickling. “We would have liked to have earned the title on the field. Winning four straight means you’ll never earn any of them the same way. This was just not what we had hoped for; it is what it is. It doesn’t change our goal we’ve had from day one — get into the round of 16 again and battle to make it to the (PIAA Class 3A) round of eight.

“We will face the No. 3 team out of the WPIAL on Nov. 8,” added Bickling. “They will be strong. We just played our best 60 minutes of the season versus the best team in District 10, Region 6 champion McDowell. We let up and things got away from us, but the girls proved they can play at that level. We have time to really dial things in before we play that match. If the girls put in the work, the round of eight is very much possible.”

In Class 1A, No. 6 Eisenhower will take on No. 3 Seneca at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Titusville High School. The winner of that game will face the winner of No. 7 Girard and No. 2 Mercer on Thursday.
