YOUNGSVILLE — Youngsville gave Sheffield its best shot Monday during volleyball action at Youngsville High School, but when the dust settled it was the Wolverines on the winning end of a matchup between the two Warren County rivals.
Sheffield earned a 25-18 victory in the opener followed by a 25-13 Game 2 win and a thrilling 26-24 decision to close things out.
After the Wolverines cruised in the first game, they continued with more of the same in the second win. Sheffield’s Kassidy Orinko took over early in the second game running off a number of impressive kills and blocks to help Sheffield build an 11-2 lead.
After an Eagles timeout, Youngsville’s Madi Johnson ran off five straight service points to get the Eagles back in it, but Sheffield closed the game on a 14-6 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
The third, and ultimately final game of the night, was the most thrilling with Youngsville’s Dilyn Moore starting the game with four straight service points to give the Eagles an early lead. Orinko responded with a kill to give control back to Sheffield and the Wolverines soon appeared to have things in hand with match point and a 24-19 lead.
Youngsville wouldn’t go down quietly as Harlee Swearingen roped off five straight service points to tie the game at 24-24, sending the Youngsville student section into a frenzy. The rally ultimately fell just short with Sheffield scoring the match’s final two points and claiming a 3-0 sweep of the Eagles.
“We were able to get everyone some playing time tonight and pleased to have all of our starters available as well,” Sheffield head coach Melissa Lemay said. “Communication was better tonight as was our serve receive and passing. We were a little shaky from the service line tonight, but we were trying to be a little more aggressive, so there are bound to be a few more errors.”
Orinko finished with nine kills, nine digs and four blocks for the Wolverines while Kadence Steffan added 23 assists and Syrena Antonuccio finished with six aces.
For the Eagles, Moore had 13 assists, Johnson had 12 assists, freshman Rilee Robinault finished with six blocks and six digs and Olivia Darling had a team-high six aces.
Sheffield also won the junior varsity contest 2-0 with game wins of 25-16 and 25-18. Peyton Wotorson had 10 assists; Emma Roell and Madi Connolly each had six kills; and Emily Davidson had five digs.
For the Knights, Harlee Swearingen had four aces in defeat and Shelby Lobdell added eight digs.
The Eagles return to action Tuesday hosting Tidioute for Senior Night. Sheffield has a long-awaited home match on Wednesday when Brockway comes to town.
