Warren took a quick 8-0 lead, but fizzled in a 34-14 non-region loss to Fairview on Saturday at Youngsville High School.
The Dragons had won two straight, but needed a late field goal to squeak by winless Conneaut, 10-7, in week 4. Warren, now 2-3 overall, again couldn’t capitalize on opportunities in week 5 against the visiting Tigers.
“We self-inflicted with our own mistakes,” said Morelli. “In the first half, we had a drive going, we fumbled. They picked up the ball, drove the length of the field, and took a 15-8 lead at halftime. In the second half, we moved the ball well between the 20s on offense, but penalties were absolutely killing us.”
After a 50-28 victory over Girard two weeks ago at Mike Shine Field, the Dragons appeared to pick up where they left off. Just 92 seconds in on Saturday, Warren quarterback Eric Dippold hit a crossing Tommy Nyquist who took it the rest of the way for an 83-yard score. Dippold connected with Cayden Wright on the 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Fairview (3-2) responded with a 43-yard touchdown run from Jared Gennuso on its first offensive possession. Gennuso had 73 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter due to injury.

On its second possession, Warren lost a fumble at Fairview’s 10-yard line. The Tigers drove the length of the field for the lead. Charles Chevalier’s 3-yard plunge at 7:29 of the second quarter, and his 2-point run, gave Fairview a 14-8 halftime lead.
“The other aspect of the game was we couldn’t come up with a big stop on defense when we needed it,” said Morelli. “They ran the ball and we couldn’t stop them, and they threw the ball well in situations.”
Fairview finished with 354 yards rushing in the game, including 95 yards and 2 second-half touchdowns from quarterback Tyler Corbin. Corbin scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter and broke free for a 40-yard score with 8:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to up the lead to 27-8.
Playing catch-up for much of the game, Warren’s Dippold completed 23-of-32 passes for 268 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception. He added 23 yards rushing. Wright was grabbing everything in the second half — 8 receptions for 85 yards and a 19-yard fourth-quarter TD. He finished with 9 catches for 95 yards. Nyquist, Warren’s versatile junior running back, finished with 6 grabs for 135 yards and 11 carries for 59 yards rushing.
Warren penalties on the same third-quarter drive negated a Nyquist 14-yard run and later a 25-yard touchdown pass from Dippold to Nyquist.

Three Fairview defenders swarm to tackle Warren running back Ethan Senz during the Dragons’ 34-14 non-region loss on Saturday at Youngsville High School.
“We drove the ball, but every time we seemed to get in scoring range, our penalties killed us,” said Morelli.
The Tigers finished with 430 yards of total offense — 264 in the second half — to the Dragons’ 356.
Jacob Truitt added a 2-yard touchdown run for Fairview at 3:58 of the fourth quarter, and later intercepted Dippold in the back of the end zone to seal it.
