Sheffield suffers second loss to Buckfield

SHEFFIELD — It wasn’t the outcome the Wolverines were hoping for coming out of their rematch Saturday with their week one opponent, Bucktail High School, falling to the Bucks 42-22. The Homecoming game loss will drop Sheffield to 0-4 on the year.

Bucktail’s Braylon Fantaski dominated all over Wolverine Mountain, rushing for 91 yards and three scores off of eight carries and hauling in five receptions for 160 yards and three more scores to give the junior a six-touchdown day.

On Sheffield’s side of the ball, Colby Barr finally found his groove in the fourth quarter, spreading the ball around while going seven of eight for 108 yards and two scores. Jeremiah Richardson had the Wolverines first touchdown of the game, a five-yard carry, which came late in the third quarter after Sheffield recovered a Bucktail fumbled punt.

Gage Mott-Macalush led Sheffield in receiving with 77 yards and a touchdown. In his second game, Mason Silvis got in the endzone as well, taking in a 38-yard touchdown pass. Silvis would also catch both of Sheffield’s successful two-point conversion passes.

“Mason Silvis was a huge addition,” said Barr. “Silvis is hitting his stride. Being able to put Mason on one side and Dylan (Hardwick) on the other, that’s huge. Gage’s swing pass today, we knew it was open. We tried to do it once earlier, and it didn’t work. To me that’s what is going to step our game up, is Colby being able to dish the ball up. We worked with Colby all week long with that confidence of throwing the ball down the ball down the field, setting his feet and coming forward, and I think it showed. He threw some great passes today.”

The Wolverines forced six fumbles, recovering four. Alex Marfink caused one and recovered one, while the versatile Matt Lobdell recovered two others. Barr made defensive changes during the week to put players into positions where they aren’t afraid to mix it up, a decision he was pleased with and will continue to expand on.

“It’s going to get harder, because game film gets out there,” said Barr of the improved defensive performance, and they see I put Hayden Holden and Alex Marfink as my defensive tackle, they’re going to start figuring out, so now we gotta take that next creative step and start working some blitz off of it. I like that fire. I like that they create a little bit of havoc in that backfield. They played hard. We’ve bumped Matt all around. He’s that utility type player. He plays hard. Marfink, that was a shot in the dark this week and I think it worked out pretty well.”
