JCC men earn second shutout

ELMA, N.Y. — In their opening NJCAA Region 3 Division III contest of the season, the Jamestown Community College men’s soccer team took care of Finger Lakes CC by a score of 4-0 Wednesday afternoon at Sahlen’s Soccer Park.

The Jayhawks (1-0-1, 1-0-0 Region 3) didn’t take long to find the net with defenseman Owain Jones (Cardiff, Wales/Coleg Y Cymoedd) scoring in the 10th minute on a free kick.

“He takes a lot of the free kicks,” Jayhawks head coach Pat Anderson said of Jones. “He’s got a good leg. He hooked it into the far corner of the net.”

Not more than a minute later, midfielder Tiago Aguilar got his first goal to make it a 2-0 game.

Sophomore forward Ethan Richardson (Llanharan, Wales/Bridgend College) took over the second half to put the game out of reach, scoring a pair of goals. Richardson’s first goal came in the 52nd minute of play, capitalizing on a penalty kick after Finger Lakes CC was called for a handball in the box. Richardson found the net once again in the 57th minute, scoring off the feed from sophomore forward Tholo Malebo (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Crawford International-Lonehill).

Freshman goalkeeper Gavin Roux (Pretoria, Gauteng, South Africa/Pretoria Boys HS) went the distance in net, making four saves. Jones, George Glover, Kim Magidhi and Carlos Kramer have defended in front of Roux on their way to a pair of shutouts this season.

“They are showing themselves to be pretty sturdy so far, but the competition is going to get better,” Anderson said of his defense. “They’ve gotten good support from the midfield, too.”

The Jayhawks will have a quick turnaround as they host Gannon University on Friday at 2 p.m.

Starting at $4.00/week.
