Warren looks to take another step forward against Conneaut

Times Observer photo by Jon Sitler Warren seniors Carson Farr (7), Tommasso Clemente (79), and Davonte Raffanello (74) chase Girard quarterback Gabe Messmer in the backfield last Friday in a 50-28 win at Youngsville High School. Warren hits the road at 7 tonight at Conneaut for a Region 4 contest.

Warren earned its first win a week ago — 50-28 over Girard in a special night at Youngsville High School. The Dragons look to make it two in a row tonight at Conneaut.

“I think it is safe to say they had fun and enjoyed that winning feeling and want more of it,” said Warren coach Mark Morelli, whose Dragons are 1-2 overall and look for their first Region 4 win against Conneaut. “But it is not something that is handed to you or you are entitled to it. Conneaut may be 0-3, but I am sure they will be up for the game, especially since we have never won there since I have been the head coach.”

Warren opened last season with a 33-0 shutout of Conneaut at War Memorial Field.

“They like to run their quarterbacks; they have two of them in Ben Easler (sophomore, 5-9, 165) and Logan Groover (junior, 5-9, 170),” said Morelli. “If one is not the QB, then he is the halfback. Iso, dive, and an occasional option look. Throwing the ball, they like to flood an area. We need to stay within ourselves, stay focused, execute the game plan we put in this week, and play to our capabilities.”

Not only do the Dragons know what they need to do, they know who they need to do it.

“Ethan Senz and Tommy Nyquist give us a nice one-two punch in the backfield, so we need to keep utilizing their strengths,” said Morelli. “Cayden Wright has emerged as a big-play threat to go along with Eric Dippold’s throwing ability. Defensively, Nick Pennucci is the quarterback of our defense and the leader who gets everyone lined up correctly. Gavin Rex has been a nice find kicking our extra points and kickoffs.

“Our squad saw last week what happens when you play with energy and effort for four quarters,” added Morelli. “They need to bottle it and bring that high-voltage attitude out each week from here on out.”
