Warren girls open with victory

CAMBRIDGE SPRINGS — Warren’s girls soccer team overcame a slow start to defeat host Cambridge Springs 5-2 on Monday.

“We started a little sluggish and had issues holding possession in the early part of the first half,” said Warren coach Jeremy Bickling. “Cambridge Springs was able to collect a misplayed header in front of the goal and capitalize. After that goal, we buckled down and started to work out the kinks.”

Trailing 1-0, freshman Meea Irwin converted a penalty kick to tie the score, and senior Lauren Anderson followed with a successful shot from long range.

After Cambridge Springs tied the score early in the second half, Warren’s Ella Ordiway hit a long-range strike to take the lead again. Irwin followed with her second goal of the night and of her varsity career.

“I wasn’t stressed when Cambridge Springs tied up the match,” said Bickling. “I could see things starting to click and was confident if the girls kept working they would open the match up.”

Ellie Yeager’s first Warren varsity goal upped the lead to the final, 5-2.

“All in all, we are pleased,” said Bickling. “Cambridge Springs is a solid team. We have a lot of new faces in new positions; it’s just going to take time to iron out all of the wrinkles.”

Ordiway, Ella Getner, Georgie Bickling and Anderson assisted goals for Warren.

Starting at $3.50/week.
