Tarp Skunks lose fourth straight, fall to fifth place

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. — The postgame fireworks turned out to be the main highlight for fans of the Jamestown Tarp Skunks on Friday night.

Batavia collected 12 hits and took advantage of 12 walks and seven wild pitches to post a 16-4 seven-inning victory in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action at Diethrick Park.

The win improves the West Division-leading Muckdogs’ record to 23-10, while Jamestown — losers of four straight — falls to 17-17 and into fifth place. Only the first four teams advance to the postseason.

To turn the recent slide around, the Tarp Skunks will need to get better pitching.

“It’s hard to produce (16 runs on just 12 hits),” Tarp Skunks manager Jordan Basile said. “That means we’re not throwing enough strikes out there. That’s what it’s coming down to. We’ve got to get out there and compete. Free passes aren’t going to win you baseball games.”

Starter Richard King lasted only 1 1/3 innings, leaving with Jamestown in a 5-1 hole. Nathan Smith didn’t fare any better in relief as he surrendered 10 runs and seven hits, walked six, threw five wild pitches and hit a batter in three innings. Mark Tucker, who started the game at second base, was the most effective on the mound, working the final 2 2/3 innings and allowing a run and a hit while walking three.

“Credit to Mark for stepping up for the team right there,” Basile said. “It’s not that we didn’t have pitchers available, it’s that we have upcoming games. When you get down 10 runs, you ask somebody to step up and Mark was willing to do that. His tempo was great. He actually had some hitters rattled because he was working so quickly and he was throwing strikes.”

Josh Leadem collected three hits, including a double; and Gavin Schrader, Alex Torres and Abner Benetiz added two apiece as the Muckdogs scored in all but one inning.

Yogie Hartigan had two of the Tarp Skunks’ seven hits and drove in a run. Pat Bigham and Johnny Kampes accounted for Jamestown’s other RBIs.

After traveling to Utica for a 6:45 p.m. game today, Jamestown will return to Diethrick Park for a 4 p.m. game Sunday against Batavia and a 6:30 p.m. contest Monday against Niagara.

Basile remains optimistic that the Tarp Skunks will find their way into the postseason.

“We’re still confident we’re going to get in there, but we have to play better baseball,” he said. “The way we played tonight isn’t going to cut it.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
