Skunks suffer 6th straight setback
BATAVIA — Jerry Reinhart walked with the bases loaded to force in teammate Daniel Burroway with the game-winning run as the Batavia Muckdogs handed the Jamestown Tarp Skunks their sixth straight loss 2-1 on Tuesday night at Dwyer Stadium.
Eddie Galatas entered as the Tarp Skunks’ third pitcher of the night to start the bottom of the ninth inning and gave up a single to Burroway. Kyle Corso and Levis Aguila Jr. followed with walks to load the bases before Galatas issued a free pass to Reinhart on five pitches.
Jamestown fell to 17-19-1 on the season, 8 1/2 games behind the first-place Muckdogs. The Tarp Skunks are also 1 1/2 games behind the Geneva Red Wings for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West Division.
The Tarp Skunks went up 1-0 in the top of the second inning Tuesday. Brandon Lane reached on an infield single and stole second before Julian Thompson walked. Lane then scored on an error as Batavia’s second baseman threw the ball away attempting a would-be inning-ending double play.
Batavia tied the game in the bottom of the third off Jamestown starter Patrick Demarco. Alex Torres singled to right field to open the frame. With one out, Kenny Dodson grounded to third and Torres was put out at second base, but an error allowed Dodson to reach second and extend the inning. Josh Leadem then reached on an error and Dodson went to third before a double steal plated the Muckdogs’ first run.
Demarco went 6 1/3 innings, allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out one.
Ryan Rafalski then threw 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out two.
Ryan Kinney, Tyler Henshaw and Julian Pichardo combined on a four-hitter with seven strikeouts while walking four and allowing just the one unearned run.
Jamestown returns to action at Diethrick Park tonight at 6:30 when it hosts the Elmira Pioneers. The teams are now tied for fifth place.
