After six-plus hours and two seven-inning games of baseball on a hot Wednesday evening at Diethrick Park, the Jamestown Tarp Skunks were rewarded with one win over the Oneonta Outlaws.
Jamestown starting pitcher Ian Korn gutted through 6 2/3 innings on the mound during a 9-8 Game 1 victory before the Tarp Skunks nearly walked off with another 9-8 win in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 2.
A close call at the plate didn’t go their way and two outs later the game ended in a tie.
Jamestown improved to 10-6-1 in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League’s West Division while Oneonta fell to 6-9-1 in the East Division.
“A tie is a tie. You’d like to have a complete outcome,” Jamestown head coach Jordan Basile said. “At the end of the day, to come here and play a doubleheader, and get a win without a loss, I’d say overall it’s a good day.”
The Tarp Skunks jumped on top 3-0 in the first inning of Game 1 when Brandon Lane hit an RBI double, Johnny Kampes hit a sacrifice fly and Nate Johnson chipped in an RBI single.
The Outlaws pulled within a run at 3-2, but Jamestown used a four-run fifth inning to jump back ahead by five. Cody Bey and Yogie Hartigan had RBI singles, Padraig O’Shaughnessy had a sacrifice fly and Lane had an RBI groundout in the frame.
Oneonta scored twice in the top of the sixth before Jack Davis and Royce Frazier had RBI groundouts in the bottom half of the inning. All told, the Tarp Skunks drove in five of their nine runs without hits.
“Just put the ball in play,” Basile said. “We did do a good job of that in some situations.”
Things got dicey in the top of the seventh inning. Knowing the team would still need pitching to get through Game 2, Basile stuck with Korn as long as possible. He got through two outs without a run scoring, but an error and a wild pitch plated the Outlaws’ fifth and sixth runs. Devin Boone then hit a two-run single to chase Korn with one out to go.
Jamestown High School product Bryce Jackson relieved and got Evan Keegan to fly out to center field on the first pitch he threw.
Having already warmed for his one-pitch appearance in Game 1, Basile chose to have Jackson start Game 2 after a long break. The right-hander got through two innings with the game tied 1-1.
“Bryce warms up, throws one pitch and has to wait 40 minutes,” Basile said. “Unfortunately, I think that’s part of the reason Bryce didn’t have his best stuff in the second game.”
The Tarp Skunks took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Lane drove in a run on a grounder to the shortstop that resulted in an error and another run scoring. Kampes then hit an RBI single.
Oneonta made it 4-3 in the top of the fourth before Jamestown answered with another three runs. Frazier doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch before O’Shaughnessy hit a two-run double to right-center field that chased Outlaws starting pitcher Jake Sandridge.
Oneonta tied the game with a four-run top of the fifth before taking its first lead of the day in the sixth inning. By that point, the Tarp Skunks had already gone through relievers Derek Benzinger and Johnson.
“We weren’t necessarily running out of arms, but we just wanted to find somebody who could come out of the bullpen and give us some strikes,” Basile said. “At the end of the day, just too many walks, and mistakes that led to runs and allowed them back in the game.”
Down by a run in the bottom of the sixth, Mark Tucker led off with a double to the left-field wall off Outlaws reliever John Hacker. After a passed ball, Bey hit an RBI single to tie the game.
Oneonta catcher Christopher Baillargeon then visited Hacker at the mound, but was immediately turned away by the field umpire, who deemed the Outlaws had used up their mound visits for the game. This prompted an argument from head coach John Boland, who was ejected from the game.
“You get six total, three can come from the coaches. That catcher had actually made four visits at that point,” Basile said. ” … They were coming out an awful lot and there was a lot of miscommunication on the other side.”
After a walk and a stolen base, Bey was stranded at third.
A scoreless seventh led to one extra inning with a runner starting at second base. Tarp Skunks reliever Eddie Galatas erased Oneonta’s Connor Cooney on a pickoff play then quickly retired the next two hitters.
“That was huge. That changed the momentum right there,” Basile said. “When you have a man on second with no outs, you are anticipating somebody is going to put a run across.”
Hartigan pinch-ran for Kayne McGee to start Jamestown’s half of the eighth. After an intentional walk to Frazier, Tucker hit a line-drive single to left field. Hartigan rounded third with would have been the winning run, but was called out at the plate. A strikeout and a grounded then ended the game in a tie.
“We had other opportunities, but I think we’ll look back at that play at home and see that he was safe,” Basile said. “That’s a game-ending play.”
NOTES: Jamestown will travel to Maglie Stadium in Niagara Falls for a 5:30 matchup with the Power this afternoon. … Oneonta, which likely didn’t return home until nearly 5 a.m., travels to Glens Falls for a 7 p.m. first pitch.
