If there isn’t enough proof already that Warren Area High School’s swimming and diving team has arrived at the state level, three athletes have been named to the Pennsylvania High School Swimming and Diving Coaches Association all-state teams.
A year after winning the PIAA 2A state championship in the 200-yard freestyle event, senior Katie Beyer won her third straight District 10 title in the event and her first 100 free title. At states this year, Beyer earned a silver medal in the 200 free and bronze in the 100 free with two school records. She has been named all-state in each event by the PHSSCA.
All-state awards are presented to the top eight finishers in all events (individual, relay, and diving) at the PIAA Meet; or to any swimmer (relay and individual) placing ninth through 16th that equals or betters the eighth place time from the preliminary session.
All-state honorable mention is presented to the ninth through 16th finishers in all events (individual, relay and diving) who do not equal or better the eighth-place time from the preliminary session at the PIAA meet.
Senior teammate Katie Madigan was also named all-state in diving. At the District 10 2A championships, Madigan secured her second straight diving title, and earned a bronze in PIAA 2A diving.

From left, sophomore Hugh Harrison and seniors Katie Beyer and Katie Madigan were named to the Pennsylvania High School Swimming and Diving Coaches Association (PHSSCA) all-state teams.
“I am honored and proud to be named first-team all-state for the second year in a row,” said Madigan, who finished fourth at the state meet as a junior. “I have worked really hard during my short diving career in order to compete with girls who have been diving since they were little. Hard work pays off. Being named all-state will give me the confidence and drive to do great things next year as I continue my diving career at Clarion University.”
Beyer will swim at St. Bonaventure beginning in the fall.
“Its an honor to be named all-state knowing that I’m named one of the best swimmers in Pennsylvania, which gives me confidence going into freshman year of college,” said Beyer. “I know I have plenty of work to do to compete with the other A10 teams. I have been busy with track and all the graduation plans, so I will be reflecting and improving this summer to get stronger.”
In Class 3A, sophomore teammate Hugh Harrison was also a multiple award winner.
For the Dragon boys, Harrison repeated in the boys’ D10 3A 200 free and won the 100 backstroke.
In breaking both school-record times, Harrison was named all-state in the 100 back, finishing 10th at the PIAA 3A Meet at Bucknell University in late March. He was named all-state honorable mention in the 200 individual medley with his 13th-place PIAA finish.
“Being named all-state this year was a great accomplishment to end my sophomore season,” said Harrison. “Being named all-state with two years left of high school gives me a lot to live up to in the future. Now I’ve proven I can hang with the best in the state; it motivates me to want to be the best in the state, and gives me high expectations for myself.”
