Warren softball wins battle of unbeatens

Warren’s softball team stayed unbeaten, handing visiting General McLane its first loss, with a 4-2 win on Monday at Lady Dragons Field.
“I knew it was going to be another close game,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart, whose Dragons are 4-0 in Region 5. McLane falls to 4-1 in the region. “We talked before the game about manufacturing runs and taking advantage of baserunners. We were aggressive on the bases and we were able to score off of it.”
After Halle Kuzminski’s base hit in the second inning, courtesy runner Emily Davidson helped manufacture a run, stealing two bases and scoring when Carly Beers walked and gave herself up at second as Davidson scored from third.
Warren led 2-0 after Lilly Devore scored all the way from first on a Kuzminski single; it would be Kuzminski’s second of three hits on the day.
After the Lancers cut the lead to 2-1, Warren scored two more in the bottom of the fifth. Kylie Fehlman singled and scored on Lexi Hoffman’s triple. Miken Beers’ sacrifice fly brought Hoffman home, but it wouldn’t be the last time Miken Beers came up huge in the win.
“Miken made a huge play in the top seventh that saved us,” said Stuart.
Stuart’s left fielder slid to her knees to make a catch on a low liner for the second out with runners on first and third.
“I’m so proud of her for not giving up on that ball and making that catch,” said Stuart. “That was big.”
Freshman Alana Stuart won the pitcher’s duel, striking out 10 and scattering four hits and five walks.
Devore pitched four innings, striking out five, in a 13-7 shortened junior varsity win. Arianna Curtis and Ruby Kratz were both 2 for 3 for Warren.
