LEWISBURG — Safe to say Warren Area High School’s swimming and diving team had arrived when Katie Beyer brought home a state title in 2021.
No gold this year, but add a silver and two bronze medals to the trophy case.
Seniors Katie Madigan and Beyer bettered their 2021 efforts — if that was possible — in the 2022 PIAA 2A Championships on Friday and Saturday at Bucknell University.
Beyer missed repeating as state champion in the 200-yard freestyle on Friday, finishing second to Northgate’s Elise Nardozzi — 1:49.09 to 1:50.91.
The thing is, Beyer won the state title last year in a school-record 1:53.07, then bettered that in this year’s prelims (1:51.65) and again in the state finals.

Her father and head coach, Russ Beyer, said Nardozzi “improved tremendously” from last season and swam “a perfect race” in the finals on Friday, with splits from 25.87 seconds to 28.43, 27.94, and 27.95. He said Katie actually improved her splits from last year — with a separation of 25.61 in her first lap to 29.16 in her last. Last year, Beyer’s splits went from 25.11 seconds to 30.38 seconds. Nardozzi finished sixth as a freshman.
On Saturday, Beyer finished third for a bronze in the 100 freestyle in 51.49, breaking her own school record in the event. Mt. Pleasant freshman Lily King won with a time of 49.78 seconds; Nardozzi was second at 50.43.
Madigan bettered her fourth-place finish at states in 1-meter diving last year with a third as a senior. She finished with 393.65 points. Marple Newtown’s Alexandra Pastris took first with 431.65 points, while North Catholic’s Maggie Foley was second with 420.55 points.
“I went into this state meet hoping to finish higher than I did last year,” said Madigan. “I bettered my score by almost 50 points. I’m pleased with my performance. Alexandria and Maggie are great divers who have been doing this sport year-round since they were little. I’m happy to be coming home with a third-place medal.”
After learning to dive as a sophomore in high school, Madigan will continue the sport at Division II Clarion University in the fall.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my high school diving career,” said Madigan. “I got a late start, but I have been able to accomplish every goal that I set for myself. I’m thankful to have been able to share this experience with my dad as my coach over the last two seasons. I’m looking forward to continuing my diving career at Clarion next year. I can’t wait to see what I can accomplish.”
With four state medals in high school, Beyer will swim in college at Division I St. Bonaventure University.
Madigan won back-to-back District 10 2A diving championships, and Beyer won three straight D10 titles in the 200 free and another in the 100 free.
“It is a lot to take in, all the great memories, friendships I’ve created, early morning practices, time spent in and out of the pool, it was all worth it,” said Beyer. “I’m very grateful for the best teammates and coaches who have helped me achieve my goals along the way. Growing up and seeing names up on the wall, I thought it would be cool to have mine up there as well, and now that my name is up there amongst the best swimmers, it’s a great honor. To be considered one of the best swimmers in Warren history is a great accomplishment for my school and my community. I feel that swimming in Warren must mean a lot to know how many people congratulate or wish me luck, it means a lot and I appreciate all the support from the community.
“I am very excited to start a new chapter in my life and grow as a person and a swimmer,” said Beyer. “I have seen much improvement with all the new swimmers and freshmen on the team, and I think the team has a lot of young talent and they can grow and accomplish new goals with the help of their upcoming leaders.”
Only a sophomore, Hugh Harrison finished 13th in the PIAA boys’ 3A 200-yard individual medley in a school-record 1:55.00. He tied for 10th in the 100 backstroke, breaking his own school record with a 51.46.
